Elderton Neil Ashmead Grand Tourer Shiraz 2023 Barossa Valley showcases unique blue-fruited character from Nuriootpa and Greenock vineyards, delivering fresh blueberry, cherry, and savoury notes with powdery tannins and creamy finish.

Tasting Notes

Appearance

Deep crimson with excellent clarity and brilliant depth, this Barossa Valley Shiraz displays the hallmark intensity expected from premium vineyard sites. The wine's rich colour reflects the concentrated fruit character from the 1954 Nuriootpa and 1980 Greenock vineyard parcels.

Aroma

Fresh blueberry fruits dominate the nose with hints of vanilla and a distinctive gamey note that adds complexity. The bouquet reveals the beautiful, distinct, and powerful blue-fruited character these unique parcels are known for, complemented by subtle spice notes from 16 months' maturation in new and seasoned French oak on lees.

Palate

Medium-bodied, vibrant yet serious, the palate delivers brambly fruit with hints of cherry and a lovely savoury note. The wine showcases a very linear expression of Shiraz, offering exceptional balance between fruit intensity and savoury complexity. A creamy, seamless finish is supported by powdery and lively tannins that provide structure without heaviness. The 14.5% alcohol is beautifully integrated, contributing to the wine's overall harmony and persistence.

Pairs With

This distinctive Barossa Valley Shiraz pairs beautifully with grilled lamb chops, beef Wellington, or venison. Try it with charcuterie boards, slow-cooked beef brisket, or mushroom risotto, where the wine's savoury character also complements aged cheddar and peppercorn-crusted steak.

Heritage: Named after Elderton co-founder Neil Ashmead, a Barossa pioneer who helped revitalise the region. Maturation: 16 months in new and seasoned French oak on lees.

Winemaking Notes

Whole bunch inclusion adds a spicy edge to the aromatic profile whilst ensuring the tannins are vibrant and juicy. The wine was pressed straight to barrel for a little barrel fermentation followed by time on lees for malolactic fermentation. Further maturation with stirring ensured freshness was preserved throughout the 16 months in new and seasoned French oak. This careful approach allows the unique blue-fruited character from the 1954 Nuriootpa and 1980 Greenock vineyard parcels to shine, creating a wine that is medium-bodied, vibrant yet serious, with powdery and lively tannins supporting a creamy, seamless finish.

Vintage Conditions

The 2023 vintage will be remembered as a complete change from the hot and dry weather experienced in previous vintages. With ample winter rainfall and run-off leaving dams full for the first time in several years, the vineyards enjoyed a new lease of life leading into the season. The cooler ripening period allowed grapes to stay longer on the vine, especially at Greenock, and the delicate flavours and long, subtle tannin profile are a direct result of this extended hang time. This exceptional vintage produced wines with beautiful balance and finesse, showcasing the distinctive character these unique parcels are renowned for.
