Collection: Heathcote | Central Victoria Wine Region
Heathcote is one of Victoria's most distinctive wine regions — a small landscape in the heart of Central Victoria whose ancient Cambrian soils and warm growing conditions have made it a source of some of Australia's most celebrated Shiraz. Located between the McHarg and McIvor Ranges approximately 80 kilometres north of Melbourne, Heathcote has developed a strong regional identity built around concentrated, characterful red wines and a community of committed producers.
History & Heritage
The town of Heathcote was established in the 1850s during the Victorian gold rush, when the discovery of gold in Central Victoria drew prospectors from across the world and transformed the landscape, economy, and culture of the region. Viticulture in Heathcote dates to the 1860s, when the first vines were planted by the region's early settlers. The modern era of Heathcote winemaking developed significantly from the 1970s and 1980s onwards, as producers recognised the potential of the region's Cambrian soils for Shiraz of a distinctive character and quality.
The Cambrian Soils
One of Heathcote's most celebrated viticultural features is its ancient Cambrian greenstone soils, particularly associated with vineyards along the Mount Camel Range. Formed from metamorphosed basalt laid down hundreds of millions of years ago and weathered over time to produce a distinctive red-brown clay loam, these soils are well-draining and mineral-rich, and are widely regarded as a key contributor to the concentrated, structured character associated with Heathcote's most celebrated wines. Their distinctive red colour, a result of high iron oxide content, is one of the most recognisable features of the Heathcote landscape.
Climate & Geography
Heathcote's growing conditions are characterised by warm summers, cool nights, and a relatively dry growing season, with most rainfall falling in winter and spring. Cooling southerly winds help moderate vineyard temperatures during the growing season, supporting the retention of freshness and balance alongside the region's naturally warm conditions. The McIvor Range creates a diversity of aspects and exposures across the region's vineyards, contributing to variation in style across producers and sites.
Grape Varieties
Shiraz is the flagship variety of Heathcote and the wine style most closely associated with the region's reputation — typically full-bodied and deeply coloured, with dark fruit character, earthy complexity, and a structured, age-worthy profile that many producers and critics associate with the influence of the Cambrian soils. The style has a natural richness and generosity that has earned Heathcote Shiraz recognition both domestically and internationally.
Beyond Shiraz, Heathcote's warm climate and mineral-rich soils support a range of other varieties. Cabernet Sauvignon produces wines of deep colour, dark berry fruit, and firm tannin structure. Sangiovese and Tempranillo have found a natural home in the warm, dry conditions, producing wines of vibrant acidity and varietal character. Grenache, Mourvèdre, and Durif are also grown in the region, alongside white varieties including Roussanne, Marsanne, and Viognier, which have shown considerable promise in Heathcote's warm conditions.
Producers
Wild Duck Creek Estate is one of Heathcote's most recognised producers, known for wines of considerable concentration and depth, including the highly regarded Duck Muck Shiraz.
Sanguine Estate is a family-owned Heathcote estate known for Shiraz and Italian varieties that reflect the diversity of what the region's soils can produce.
Jasper Hill is one of Heathcote's founding estates and a producer whose Shirazes have been influential in establishing the region's reputation for site-driven, age-worthy red wines.
Tar & Roses is known for Italian and Spanish varieties alongside Shiraz, reflecting the breadth of Heathcote's viticultural range.
Paul Osicka is one of Heathcote's most historic producers, with a winemaking heritage in the region stretching back to the 1950s.
Other producers with a presence in the Heathcote wine region include Heathcote Estate, Noble Red, De Bortoli, Syrahmi, Mitchelton, and M. Chapoutier, reflecting a community that spans from small specialist estates to larger operations with broader reach.
Cellaring & Serving
Heathcote Shiraz is generally best served at 16–18°C in a generous red wine glass. Younger wines benefit from 20–30 minutes of breathing time; more structured expressions may benefit from decanting. The finest Heathcote Shirazes are typically considered age-worthy, with many producers and commentators noting their capacity to develop complexity over five to fifteen years or more. Heathcote Shiraz pairs well with roasted lamb, beef short rib, venison, and richly flavoured red meat dishes. The region's Sangiovese and Tempranillo are natural companions for Italian and Spanish-inspired food.
