Whistling Eagle Bomber 2022 is one of the winery’s best-selling wines and the fullest expression of the big reds of the Heathcote region — a five-variety blend of predominantly Shiraz and Cabernet, with Sangiovese, Malbec, and Grenache, grown on the ancient Cambrian Earth of the Greenstone Range above Colbinabbin. Easy to drink yet maintaining sophistication, with layers of flavour from each variety melting together into a wine of balance, depth, and the distinctive character that Whistling Eagle Vineyard has built its reputation on since Ian Rathjen’s first vintage in 1997.

Appearance

Deep, rich colour with the depth and intensity that ancient Cambrian Earth and the Heathcote region’s unique terroir consistently deliver — the hallmark of a Whistling Eagle wine grown to textbook perfection.

Aroma

A melting pot of Shiraz, Cabernet, Sangiovese, Malbec, and Grenache — the layered, complex aromatic profile of five varieties in harmonious balance, with the depth of flavour and regional character that the Cambrian Earth of Colbinabbin produces in abundance.

Palate

Supple, generous, and distinctive — easy to drink yet maintaining sophistication, with layers from five separate varieties building to a finish of balance and length. The big red of Heathcote at its most approachable and most rewarding, from one of the region’s most committed and uncompromising producers.

Pairs With

Slow-braised beef short rib, roasted lamb shoulder, char-grilled steak, or a hearty pasta with rich meat ragù — the supple tannins, generous fruit, and layered complexity of the Bomber make it a natural and deeply satisfying partner for the finest food at the table.

Winemaking Notes

A blend of predominantly Shiraz and Cabernet, with the inclusion of Sangiovese, Malbec, and Grenache — each variety contributing its own layer of flavour and complexity to a wine that epitomises the big reds of the Heathcote region. Grown on the ancient Cambrian Earth of the Greenstone Range above Colbinabbin, where the unique geology and environment produce fruit of outstanding quality and the distinctive regional character that defines Whistling Eagle.

Producer History

Whistling Eagle Vineyard is situated in the northern part of the Heathcote wine-growing region, perched on the Greenstone Range above the township of Colbinabbin — where the ancient Cambrian Earth is perfect for creating extraordinary wines. Ian and Lynn Rathjen established the vineyard and, since Ian’s limited first vintage of Shiraz in 1997, Whistling Eagle has earned a reputation for fruit grown to textbook perfection, with a flavour profile and composition beautifully balanced to create the ultimate wine experience. The vineyard has since expanded with the planting of “Three Little Eagles” as part of the Whistling Eagle estate.

“I believe our uncompromising commitment and dedication to quality at all stages of the winemaking process has enabled Whistling Eagle to create wines that are supple, generous and distinctive.” — Ian Rathjen, Winemaker

The Whistling Eagle takes its name from the bird known for its buoyant flight, soaring easily to great heights — its whistling cry audible over long distances, its prey always taken from the ground. The characteristics of the Whistling Eagle are reflected in the wines: balance and length, depth of colour and flavours that are always an expression of the ground from which they come. The Bomber is the fullest expression of that philosophy — and one of the great red blends of Heathcote.
