Wild Duck Creek Shiraz Reserve 2022 is blackcurrant jam, brambles, new leather, garrigue, mint, choc-mint, clove and cinnamon on the nose with incredible intensity, layers of spice, sweet and dark fruit and savoury characters on the palate. Wall of thick tannin, impossibly sweet and spicy finish — Heathcote estate grown, 100% new French oak, up to 27 months.

“From three estate vineyards from around Heathcote. Yes. This works. Incredible intensity and density, flow and persistence, layers and layers of spice, sweet fruit, dark fruit, savoury characters, supremely integrated oak; all at once and ongoing. Blackcurrant jam, brambles, new leather, garrigue, mint, choc-mint biscuits, breathy clove and cinnamon all jostle for attention too. There are so very many descriptors to apply here; technicolour wine of the highest order. And a striking impact. A palate drowned in flavour. Wall of thick, rumbling tannin, and then a smooth, impossibly sweet and spicy finish. How to do balance at this heft? Fairy dust. Strap in.”

96 Points — Mike Bennie, The Wine Front | Drink: 2024–2035

Winemaking Notes

Wild Duck Creek Shiraz Reserve 2022 is crafted with meticulous attention to detail at every stage of production — no stone is left unturned. The estate vineyards are cared for through hard cane pruning, shoot thinning in spring, under-vine mulching and fruit thinning at veraison to control yield and separate bunches. The fruit is partly de-stemmed, with up to 50% whole bunches used in the ferment to create layers of texture, slow down fermentation and control temperature. The resulting wine is basket-pressed into 100% new French oak barriques where it lays for up to 27 months depending on the vintage.

Vintage Conditions

Wild Duck Creek Estate is a small family-run winery situated 8km west of Heathcote, alongside the Wild Duck Creek itself. Founded by David (Duck) and Diana, who planted the first vines in 1974, the estate has fostered traditional winemaking methods and biodynamic principles for decades. Second-generation winemaking through Liam has flourished for more than a decade — his methodical yet innovative approach merging brilliantly with Duck’s eccentricity to produce extraordinary wines of balance and power. The Shiraz Reserve 2022 is sourced from three estate vineyards around Heathcote — a region of exceptional terroir ideally suited to Shiraz of extraordinary intensity, density and complexity.
