Yarran Shiraz 2025 is a rich, full-bodied Riverina Shiraz from Sam Brewer — son of founders John and Lorraine, and the winemaker behind one of Australia’s most celebrated boutique success stories. Sourced from Yarran’s own Riverina vineyards and picked at optimum ripeness, aged in a combination of French and American oak to deliver ripe plum and spicy characters with soft tannins. Vegan friendly. Named after the Acacia tree — Yarran in the local Aboriginal language — a nod to the land, history, and culture of the Yenda region of NSW.
Tasting Notes
Appearance
Deep ruby with the rich, concentrated colour of a full-bodied Riverina Shiraz — the hallmark of estate-grown fruit picked at optimum ripeness from Yarran’s vineyards on the outskirts of Yenda, NSW.
Aroma
Inviting and generous — ripe plum leads with warmth and depth, with spicy characters from French and American oak adding complexity and intrigue. The characteristic richness of Riverina Shiraz in full, approachable expression.
Palate
Rich and full-bodied — ripe plum and spice carry through with the warmth and generosity of Riverina fruit, balanced by soft tannins and the subtle complexity of French and American oak ageing. A Shiraz of genuine character and exceptional value, true to the Yarran style that James Halliday celebrated as his Dark Horse Winery.
Pairs With
Yarran Shiraz is a natural partner for the Australian table — equally at home with a Sunday roast lamb, slow-braised beef, barbecued meats, aged cheddar, and hearty pasta dishes. The ripe plum, spice, and soft tannins make it one of the most versatile and food-friendly Riverina Shiraz expressions available. Serve at 16–18°C.
Who Should Drink This?
Yarran Shiraz 2025 is for lovers of rich, approachable Australian Shiraz who want genuine quality and character at an exceptional price point. It’s a natural choice for anyone who appreciates the boutique winery story — Sam Brewer crafting estate-grown Riverina Shiraz with the same passion and skill that earned Yarran the James Halliday Dark Horse Winery accolade. If you want the best-quality Riverina Shiraz at its price point, Yarran is the answer.
Why Is Yarran Famous?
James Halliday named Yarran his Dark Horse Winery — celebrating Sam Brewer’s exceptional winemaking skills and the outstanding value of estate-grown Riverina Shiraz. “If that is your price limit, Yarran gives you the best-quality wines, both white and red. Yarran’s track record suggests this award is no flash in the pan.” The Yarran story began in 1978 when John and Lorraine Brewer purchased the property in partnership with the Maier family, redeveloping an old fruit farm into the vineyard that the winery and cellar door now call home.
What Does Yarran Mean?
Yarran is an Aboriginal word meaning Acacia Tree — a native species from the Acacia family that grows abundantly through the Yenda region and surrounds the Yarran vineyards. The name is a deliberate nod to the land, history, and culture of the region, chosen by the Brewer family to honour the significance of their location on the outskirts of Yenda, NSW.
Is It Worth Ageing?
Yarran Shiraz 2025 is crafted as a rich, approachable drink-now style — the ripe plum, spice, and soft tannins are at their most expressive and enjoyable now. The wine’s natural structure gives it the framework to develop over 3–5 years, but the hallmark generosity and fruit-forward character of Riverina Shiraz are best enjoyed young. Serve at 16–18°C.
What’s Similar?
Fans of Yarran Shiraz may also enjoy other Riverina Shiraz from producers like De Bortoli and McWilliam’s for a comparable regional richness and approachability, or explore Barossa Valley Shiraz for a similar full-bodied, fruit-driven Australian red at a step up in price. Within the Yarran range, the white varietals are equally celebrated — a testament to Sam Brewer’s versatility and skill across the full range.

Producer History
Lorraine and John Brewer purchased the property in 1978 in partnership with the Maier family, redeveloping an old fruit farm into the vineyard that Yarran Wines now calls home on the outskirts of Yenda, NSW. After 20 years of grape growing supplying local wineries, Yarran Wines was established with the first release of Shiraz in 1998. Today, John and Lorraine’s son Sam Brewer — who completed his wine degree at Charles Sturt University and famously fermented the family’s first tonne of Shiraz in a stainless-steel milk vat — is at the helm of the Yarran brand. Named after the Aboriginal word for Acacia Tree, Yarran is a nod to the land, history, and culture of the Yenda region — and a benchmark of boutique Riverina winemaking celebrated by James Halliday as his Dark Horse Winery.
