Poggiotondo Chianti Superiore Organic 2024 brings together everything we enjoy about a good Tuscan red: generous dark cherry fruit, a savoury edge and beautifully supple tannins. Made at the Antonini family's estate in Cerreto Guidi, this organically grown, Sangiovese-led Chianti has plenty of character without feeling heavy. It's a wine that feels right at home around the dinner table, particularly when there's something delicious and Italian on the menu.

Tasting Notes

Colour: Deep red.

Aroma: Ripe dark fruits with an earthy, savoury undertone.

Palate: Rich dark cherry, wild berries and a touch of spice, balanced by soft, velvety tannins.

Finish: Long and satisfying, with lingering fruit and savoury complexity.

Food Pairing

This is a natural partner for Italian cooking. Pour it alongside slow-cooked beef ragù, grilled lamb or a generous plate of pasta with a rich tomato sauce. A few pieces of aged Pecorino also make a wonderfully simple match.

Serve at around 16–18°C to bring out the fruit and savoury detail.

Cellaring

Enjoy it now for its generous fruit and supple texture, or cellar for around 3–5 years from the 2024 vintage to see how its savoury character develops. Store in a cool, dark place.

The Vineyard

Poggiotondo is a family estate in Cerreto Guidi, Tuscany, with roots dating back to Carlo Antonini's purchase of the property in 1968. Its vineyards have been certified organic since the 2014 vintage.

The Chianti Superiore draws on selected estate vineyards with calcareous soils of ancient marine origin. These distinctive Tuscan sites are an important part of the estate's approach to growing Sangiovese and the region's traditional varieties.

Winemaking

The grapes are fermented with indigenous yeasts in temperature-controlled concrete tanks, followed by maturation in a combination of concrete and large, untoasted oak casks. This thoughtful approach allows the wine's dark cherry fruit, savoury character and supple texture to shine without the distraction of pronounced oak flavours.
