Winemaking Notes

Yangarra Old Vine Grenache 2024 is sourced exclusively from 13.3 hectares of un-irrigated bush vines planted in 1946 on deep white sands overlying red/orange clay at 200–210m above sea level in Blewitt Springs. Hand-picked in mid-March, selectively sorted in the winery, gently destemmed with 50% crushed and 50% whole berries retained. Wild yeast fermentation in stainless steel with a very gentle pump over regime — often just wetting the cap — and some extended maceration up to two and a half months to polish the tannins. No pressings used. Matured in a mixture of old Austrian and French oak foudre and puncheons, ceramic egg and amphora. Bottled February 2025. Certified organic and biodynamic. pH 3.48, TA 5.6g/L. 14% alc. 750ml.

Vintage Conditions

A normal wet winter was followed by a picturesque dry spring at Yangarra’s Blewitt Springs estate in 2024, with long-range weather patterns indicating a shift from La Niña towards El Niño favouring drier and hotter conditions. Unexpected summer rainfall in December and January presented a unique challenge, resulting in larger bunches and berry development — with warm conditions prevailing through February and early March promoting ripening of flavours and sugars with outstanding balance. The warmth led to an intense couple of weeks during which the majority of the 1946-planted bush vines were harvested — delivering a Yangarra Old Vine Grenache of exceptional complexity, perfumed elegance and enduring Blewitt Springs McLaren Vale distinction. Yangarra Estate, Blewitt Springs, McLaren Vale.
