Yamazakura Blended Japanese Whisky is a high-end expression from Sasanokawa — a Japanese spirits company with roots stretching back to 1765, when the company was founded in Koriyama, Fukushima Prefecture, as a producer of sake and shochu. Sasanokawa expanded into whisky in the 1940s, long before the start of Japan’s whisky boom, and Yamazakura represents the premium tier of their whisky range. The name says it all: Yama means mountain, Sakura means cherry tree — and the label design brings both to life. Previously exclusive to Japan, Yamazakura is now available internationally following Sasanokawa’s partnership with Les Whiskies du Monde. Bottled at 40% ABV.

Appearance

Warm golden amber with the clarity and luminosity of a carefully assembled Japanese blend.

Aroma

Delicate and refined — the hallmark of Japanese blended whisky, with a gentle sweetness, subtle fruit, and the understated elegance that defines the Sasanokawa house style. Approachable and inviting from the first nosing.

Palate

Smooth and well-balanced, with the four malt whiskies at the heart of the blend contributing complexity and depth, complemented by grain whisky for texture and accessibility. A whisky of genuine refinement and Japanese character — elegant, harmonious, and deeply satisfying.

Finish

Clean, smooth, and gently lingering — the hallmark of a Japanese blend assembled with patience and precision.

Pairs With

Sushi, sashimi, grilled chicken yakitori, miso-glazed salmon, and dark chocolate. Equally rewarding served neat, with a single ice cube, or with a splash of cold water in the Japanese mizuwari style.

Production Notes

Yamazakura is a blend of four malt whiskies of undisclosed provenance, combined with grain whisky, and assembled by Sasanokawa in Koriyama, Fukushima Prefecture. Sasanokawa operates as a blender and bottler rather than a distiller — a model common in the Japanese whisky industry and akin to the Non-Distiller Producer (NDP) model — sourcing malt whiskies of exceptional quality and blending them to a house style that reflects nearly 260 years of Japanese spirits expertise. Bottled at 40% ABV.

Producer History

Sasanokawa was founded in Koriyama, Fukushima Prefecture, in 1765 — making it one of Japan’s oldest spirits producers, with a heritage in sake and shochu that predates the country’s whisky industry by nearly two centuries. The company expanded into whisky production in the 1940s, establishing itself as a pioneer of Japanese whisky long before the category’s global boom. Yamazakura is the premium expression of that whisky tradition — previously available only in Japan, and now reaching international markets for the first time through a partnership with Les Whiskies du Monde. A whisky of genuine historical significance, from one of Japan’s most quietly remarkable spirits producers.
