The Yamazaki Distiller’s Reserve is a masterful expression from Japan’s first and most celebrated whisky distillery — a no-age-statement single malt that marries malts from ex-red wine casks, Mizunara Japanese oak casks matured for approximately twelve years, and ex-sherry casks aged for around twenty years. Released in 2014 in response to growing global demand for Yamazaki, the Distiller’s Reserve delivers the elegance and complexity that has made Yamazaki one of the most sought-after single malts in the world — mild, fresh, and deeply refined, with strawberry, cherry, and Mizunara oak on the nose, raspberry, white peach, and a touch of coconut on the palate, and a sweet vanilla finish with a hint of cinnamon.

Tasting Notes

Appearance

Warm, luminous gold — the inviting colour of a Japanese single malt crafted from a marriage of ex-red wine, Mizunara oak, and ex-sherry casks at Suntory’s Yamazaki Distillery in Osaka Prefecture.

Aroma

Mild and elegantly fresh — strawberry and cherry lead with the distinctive, exotic character of Mizunara Japanese oak. Delicate, refined, and immediately captivating — the unmistakable nose of a world-class Japanese single malt.

Palate

Smooth and beautifully layered — raspberry and white peach with a gentle touch of coconut, carried by the silky texture and natural complexity that Mizunara oak and sherry cask maturation deliver in harmony. Refined, approachable, and deeply satisfying.

Pairs With

Yamazaki Distiller’s Reserve pairs beautifully with sushi, sashimi, light charcuterie, white chocolate, and fresh berries — and is best appreciated neat or with a single drop of water to open the delicate layers of this extraordinary Japanese single malt.

Production Notes

Released in 2014 in response to the global surge in demand for Yamazaki, the Distiller’s Reserve is a marriage of three distinct cask types — ex-red wine casks, Mizunara (Japanese white oak) casks matured for approximately twelve years, and ex-sherry casks aged for around twenty years. Non-age-statement and bottled at 43% ABV, it was created to showcase the breadth of Yamazaki’s cask inventory and the extraordinary versatility of the distillery’s house style. Mizunara oak — a rare Japanese white oak prized for its exotic coconut and sandalwood character — is a defining element of the Distiller’s Reserve and a hallmark of Suntory’s approach to maturation.

Producer History

The Yamazaki Distillery, located in Shimamoto, Osaka Prefecture, is considered Japan’s first whisky distillery — founded by Suntory’s visionary founder Shinjiro Torii in 1923, with master distiller Masataka Taketsuru at the helm. Nestled at the confluence of three rivers in a region celebrated for its pure water and high humidity, Yamazaki has spent a century producing single malts of extraordinary refinement and complexity. The distillery’s global reputation reached new heights when Jim Murray’s Whisky Bible awarded the 2013 Yamazaki Sherry Cask the title of Best Whisky in the World in 2016 — a moment that cemented Japanese whisky’s place among the world’s finest, and made Yamazaki a name on the lips of enthusiasts and casual drinkers alike.
