Winemaking Notes

Water Wheel Memsie Shiraz 2022 saw the cap plunged and pumped over three times daily during fermentation to extract optimal colour, flavour and tannins. After pressing in a membrane press and completion of malolactic fermentation, a percentage of the wine underwent micro-oxygenation with the balance of the wine spending time in American Oak Hogsheads. The wine is earth-filtered and then sterile-filtered to bottle, ensuring clarity and stability. Memsie now produces delicious, round, full-flavoured wines perfect for immediate consumption. Named after the nearby historic Memsie Estate, established in 1839 on the banks of the Loddon River, the vineyard is planted on heavy clay soil with pieces of limestone present. Soil is deep-ripped before planting, and vines are hedged trellised, exposing the grapes to the sun to achieve maximum ripeness. The 2022 vintage showcases fresh and appealing berry characters with sweet, rich red berry flavours complemented by spice and balanced oak flavours.

Vintage Conditions

In 1833 John Catto left his native Scotland to seek his fortune in the new colony of Australia. He settled near what would become Bendigo, calling his new home Memsie after the village from where he had come, and planted a vineyard on clay soil rich with limestone. The 2022 vintage in Bendigo produced ideal conditions for Shiraz, allowing the fruit from heavy clay soil with limestone to develop fresh and appealing berry characters whilst achieving maximum ripeness through hedged trellising that exposed the grapes to the sun. The vintage created wines that are forward and mouth-filling with sweet, rich red berry flavours complemented by spice and balanced oak. The Bendigo conditions ensured the fruit developed optimal flavour concentration, resulting in a vivid garnet red Shiraz perfect for immediate consumption. The 2022 vintage allowed Water Wheel to craft a delicious, round, full-flavoured wine that showcases the quality and character of the Memsie vineyard. Named after the nearby historic Memsie Estate, established in 1839 on the banks of the Loddon River, the combination of ideal vintage conditions, heavy clay soil with limestone, and careful winemaking including micro-oxygenation and American Oak Hogsheads created an exceptional wine that reflects the heritage of the region and the vision of John Catto.
