The Melbourne Gin Company Dry Gin is a classic gin with a twist of Melbourne — hand crafted, batch distilled, and non-chill filtered at Gembrook Hill Vineyard in the Yarra Valley, 60 kilometres from the city it is named after. Eleven botanicals, both local and exotic, are each individually extracted, distilled, and blended to create a well-rounded, smooth, and slightly surprising gin that encapsulates the cosmopolitan character of the world’s most liveable city. The final component is Gembrook rainwater — pure enough to let every botanical shine through without interference.

Appearance

Pale and luminous — the clarity of a non-chill filtered gin made with rainwater of exceptional purity.

Aroma

Classic juniper and coriander seed provide the foundation, with grapefruit peel and rosemary from the Gembrook Hill Vineyard garden adding a fresh, aromatic lift that is distinctly of place. Macadamia, sandalwood, honey lemon myrtle, and organic navel orange bring warmth and native Australian character, whilst angelica root, orris root, and cassia bark add the cosmopolitan exotic depth that reflects Melbourne’s own character.

Palate

Well-rounded, smooth, and slightly surprising — an unexpected mix of classic and contemporary, local and exotic, that reveals its layers progressively. The winemaker’s sensibility behind the blend is evident in the balance and integration of eleven individually distilled botanicals, each given the attention it deserves before being brought together in the final gin.

The Melbourne Gin Company is produced at Gembrook Hill Vineyard in the Yarra Valley by winemaker Andrew Marks, who distils each of the eleven botanicals individually in an alembic copper-pot still — balancing seasonal differences in the ingredients with the same sensibility he brings to winemaking. The local botanicals — grapefruit peel and rosemary from the Gembrook Hill Vineyard garden, macadamia, sandalwood, honey lemon myrtle, and organic navel orange — are complemented by the exotic: angelica root, orris root, and cassia bark, which bring Melbourne’s cosmopolitan character to the blend. The gin is non-chill filtered and made with rainwater collected at Gembrook in the Yarra Ranges — a water of exceptional purity that allows the botanicals to express themselves without interference.

Producer History

The Melbourne Gin Company began with a question from winemaker Andrew Marks: “How do you create a gin that encapsulates a city?” Starting with a love of gin and stovetop experiments, Andrew set out on a journey into the world of alchemy and craft distilling — with a good deal of sampling along the way — before arriving at a recipe that lives up to its name. Based at Gembrook Hill Vineyard in the Yarra Valley, overlooking the vines that inspired the project, The Melbourne Gin Company retains the artisan approach of its origins in every batch it produces.
