The Botanist Islay Dry Gin is a progressive exploration of the botanical heritage of Islay — one of the most distinctive and storied islands in Scotland, and the home of Bruichladdich distillery. Twenty-two hand-foraged local botanicals, gathered from Islay’s pristine beaches, heather-clad mountaintops, and ancient hedgerows, delicately augment nine classic berries, barks, seeds, and peels during an achingly slow distillation that allows every botanical to express itself fully. The result is a gin of extraordinary complexity, smoothness, and a sense of place that is impossible to replicate anywhere else in the world.

Appearance

Crystal clear with the luminous purity of a gin distilled with exceptional patience and precision on the Isle of Islay.

Aroma

A symphony of Islay’s natural wonders — sweet menthol and apple mint lead, with citrus, floral notes, and the subtle wild character of hand-foraged island botanicals weaving through a bouquet of genuine complexity and depth. Fresh, layered, and endlessly rewarding.

Palate

Smooth and velvety, with a refreshing coolness followed by a gentle warmth that comes from the unhurried distillation process. Sweet menthol, apple mint, citrus, and floral notes glide across the palate in a seamless and captivating progression — a gin that reveals something new with every sip.

Serving Suggestions

Exceptional with premium tonic and a sprig of fresh mint or a twist of lemon to echo the menthol and citrus botanicals. Outstanding served neat over ice, where the full complexity of the 22 hand-foraged botanicals can be appreciated without distraction. A gin of this character deserves a glass that gives it room to breathe.

Production Notes

The Botanist is produced at Bruichladdich distillery on Islay using a unique botanical bill of 31 ingredients in total — nine classic gin botanicals (berries, barks, seeds, and peels) augmented by 22 botanicals hand-foraged from the island itself. The foraged botanicals are gathered by hand from across Islay’s diverse landscapes, from the Atlantic shoreline to the heather moorlands, and change subtly with the seasons and the year’s growing conditions. The distillation is achingly slow — a deliberate and unhurried process that allows the delicate flavours and aromas of each botanical to be captured at their best, resulting in a gin of extraordinary smoothness, complexity, and depth.

Producer History

Bruichladdich distillery has stood on the shores of Loch Indaal on the Isle of Islay since 1881 — one of Scotland’s most progressive and independently minded distilleries, celebrated for its commitment to terroir, transparency, and the extraordinary natural environment of Islay. The Botanist was born from Bruichladdich’s deep connection to the island and its botanical heritage — a gin that is as much an expression of Islay as any whisky the distillery has ever produced. Hand-foraged, slowly distilled, and unmistakably of its place, The Botanist is a gin that could only come from this island, and from this distillery.
