The Chita Distillery, established in 1972 by Keizo Saji on the misty shores of the Chita Peninsula, produces three distinct types of grain whisky — heavy-type (two columns), medium-type (three columns), and clean-type (four columns) — a diversity that is rare among grain whisky distillers worldwide. To create The Chita Single Grain Whisky, Chief Blender Shinji Fukuyo ages Chita grain whisky in American White Oak, wine casks, and Spanish Oak — a multi-cask approach that imbues greater complexity, depth of flavour, and the unparalleled sophistication that distinguishes The Chita from the grain whiskies used in Suntory’s renowned blended expressions.

Producer History

The Chita Distillery was founded in 1972 by Keizo Saji — Suntory’s second Master Blender — on the misty, calm shores of the Chita Peninsula, in pursuit of Shinjiro Torii’s vision for diverse and truly Japanese whiskies. Using mainly corn grain and a continuous multiple column distillation process, Chita grain whiskies have long served as the dashi — the broth — that enhances the harmony in Suntory’s world-renowned blended whiskies. The Chita Single Grain Whisky, first released in September 2015, represents the culmination of that legacy: a grain whisky of such sophistication and complexity that it stands proudly as a single grain expression in its own right.
