Sons of Eden Freya Riesling 2026 is a pristine, intensely mineral expression of old vine Eden Valley Riesling — sourced from two distinguished vineyard sites in the cooler Craneford sub-region, where vines of 45 to 60 years of age yield small, concentrated parcels of exceptional quality. Elegant zesty lime, elderflower, and white spice on the nose; rich, concentrated citrus and white peach on the palate; with well-integrated natural acidity and an enduring minerality that speaks eloquently of the high-altitude cool sites of central Eden Valley. A wine of exceptional poise, elegance, and ageing potential. Freya was the foremost goddess of ancient Germanic lands — where the Riesling grape originated — honouring the early German settlers who cultivated the first Riesling vines in the Barossa’s Eden Valley.

Tasting Notes

Appearance

Brilliant pale straw with green-tinged highlights — the fresh, luminous colour of a pristine old vine Eden Valley Riesling from high-altitude Craneford sub-region sites, with the crystal clarity that whole-bunch pressing, cold settling, and cool fermentation deliver.

Aroma

Elegant and immediately inviting — zesty lime and lemon citrus intertwine with delicate elderflower blossoms and subtle white spice. Hints of green apple, wet stone minerality, and a whisper of jasmine add complexity and aromatic lift. Quintessentially Eden Valley in character.

Palate

Rich and concentrated — lime zest, crisp green apple, and white peach carry through a palate of impressive depth and structure, with well-integrated natural acidity providing balance and length. The enduring minerality courtesy of the balanced natural acidity retained at harvest delivers a lively, persistent finish of exceptional poise and elegance.

Pairs With

Sons of Eden Freya Riesling 2026 pairs beautifully with fresh oysters, sashimi, Thai green curry, Vietnamese spring rolls, goat’s cheese salad, and grilled prawns — a versatile, elegant Riesling equally rewarding as a refined aperitif.

Winemaking Notes

Freya Riesling 2026 is a blend of fruit from two old vine Eden Valley vineyards in the cooler Craneford sub-region — Cranes Range (460m altitude, 45+ year old vines, 1.25 t/acre) and Roesler (430m altitude, 60+ year old vines, 1.5 t/acre). All fruit was hand-harvested in the cool of the morning across multiple picking dates. Each Riesling block was kept separate and chilled to 6°C before whole-bunch pressing, retaining only the finest free-run juice. The juice was cold settled for 7 days before being racked clear to begin fermentation at 12–14°C for 2 weeks, then left for 4 months on yeast lees to build palate texture. Individual parcels were blended and naturally stabilised before bottling.

Vintage Conditions

Vintage 2026 was a 74-day journey beginning 26th February — starting on the tail end of an extended warm dry period, through a wet mid-point, and concluding with a classic Indian Summer. Ample winter rains and useful spring top-ups enabled slow development of full vine canopies with balanced crop potential. Significantly dry and warm conditions from December to end of February ensured small berries and low yields — a key factor in achieving highly concentrated, intensely flavoured Riesling. Rain at the beginning of March delayed harvest in some instances, though the Eden Valley Rieslings were largely harvested prior to the rain. The Rieslings are pristine and intense, with an enduring minerality courtesy of the balanced natural acidity retained at harvest. Growing season rainfall 200mm (average 261mm); Growing Degree Days 1,640 (average 1,578).
