Quantity

Rabbit Ranch Pinot Noir 2023 is a bright-eyed Central Otago red with hints of briar patch and a whiff of gun smoke — soft, fruit-forward, and low in tannin, made to be savoured and supped rather than an assault on the senses. From a former high country sheep station where rabbits now run free, fuelled by high-altitude Pinot Noir. Some are reputed to be the size of ponies — but that’s another story.

Appearance

Bright ruby with the luminous clarity of a cool-climate Central Otago Pinot Noir grown close to the 45th parallel — the vibrant, inviting colour of a high-altitude vineyard where long, slow ripening and yield-sensitive viticulture deliver fruit of genuine intensity and finesse.

Aroma

Hints of briar patch and a whiff of gun smoke — the distinctive, perfumed bouquet of a Central Otago Pinot Noir from a site where cool inland conditions and complementary terroir allow the elusive character of the variety to express itself with clarity and charm.

Palate

Soft, fruit-forward, and low in tannin — a wine to be savoured and supped, with the bright, perfumed fruit and gentle structure that Central Otago Pinot Noir at this altitude and latitude consistently delivers. A brilliant example of the potential of Pinot Noir when grown in areas of complementary terroir.

Pairs With

Roast duck, salmon, mushroom dishes, soft cheeses, and pinot-friendly charcuterie — or simply as the most approachable and enjoyable red for any occasion that calls for something bright, perfumed, and deeply savourable. Serve slightly cool.

Winemaking Notes

Central Otago Pinot Noir crafted in a very soft, fruit-forward, low-tannin style — grown close to the 45th parallel in a cool, inland, high-altitude site where long, slow ripening and yield-sensitive viticulture deliver the perfumed, elusive character that has made Central Otago Pinot Noir world-famous. Like Burgundy in its requirements, and increasingly its reputation.

Producer History

Land that was once a high country sheep station is now a flourishing Central Otago vineyard. Sheep and rabbits co-existed on the land for quite some time — but the sheep couldn’t keep up with the nocturnal activity of the rabbits, and in the end were driven off the land. The owner of Rabbit Ranch — Mr McGregor — planted some vines and tried unsuccessfully to reduce the rabbit population. Rabbits now run free on the vineyard, fuelled by high-altitude Pinot Noir. Some are reputed to be the size of ponies. But that’s another story.
