Pipers Pinot Gris 2024 is a modern expression of a Tasmanian icon — combining tradition with innovation to artfully pay homage to the rich history of Pipers Brook Vineyard. Produced from grapes grown at Pipers Brook and at Strathlynn on the west bank of the Tamar River, from pioneering old vine clonal selections on Ferrosol volcanic soils and Vertosol black cracking clay, both with excellent water-holding capacity. Bush pear and mandarin peel with citrus blossom and wild honey on the nose — textured on the palate, with a crisp, clean mineral finish that speaks eloquently of Tasmania’s cool maritime climate and exceptional terroir.

Tasting Notes

Appearance

Pale straw with delicate green highlights — the fresh, luminous colour of a Tasmanian Pinot Gris from old vine material on volcanic and black cracking clay soils, with the clarity and precision that cold harvesting, gentle pressing, and cool fermentation deliver.

Aroma

Bush pear and mandarin peel with citrus blossom and wild honey — a nose of genuine Tasmanian character and aromatic finesse, with the delicate complexity that skin contact, slow cool fermentation, and brief lees maturation in French oak and stainless steel deliver.

Palate

Textured and beautifully balanced — the bush pear and citrus character carries through a palate of genuine depth and mineral precision, with a crisp, clean mineral finish that reflects the strong maritime influences of the northeast Tasmanian sites close to Bass Strait. Bottled early under screwcap to preserve freshness and intensity.

Pairs With

Pipers Pinot Gris 2024 pairs beautifully with pan-seared scallops, grilled barramundi, pork belly, soft washed-rind cheeses, and Asian cuisine with delicate spicing — equally rewarding as a refined aperitif.

Winemaking Notes

Cold harvested at night, the fruit was gently pressed following a short period of skin contact. The juice is cold settled and racked off solids, retaining some light fluffy lees, before fermenting slowly at cool temperatures in a combination of French oak barrels and stainless steel tanks. Following a brief period maturing on yeast lees, the wine is bottled early under screwcap to preserve freshness and intensity. Alcohol 13%.

Vintage Conditions

Pipers Pinot Gris 2024 is produced from grapes grown at Pipers Brook and at Strathlynn on the west bank of the Tamar River — 70km apart, with complementary terroirs. Northeast sites close to Bass Strait are subject to strong maritime influences, whilst the Tamar Valley’s hillside slopes offer protection from prevailing westerly winds and surprisingly low rainfall. Ferrosol volcanic soils at Pipers Brook and Vertosol black cracking clay in the Tamar Valley both offer excellent water-holding capacity, providing a steady supply of moisture and nourishment throughout the growing season. Pioneering clonal selection from old vine material ensures consistency of up-front fruit and palate balance.
