Tasting Notes
Appearance
Penfolds St Henri Shiraz 2019 presents a plum red colour with a crimson rim of exceptional depth and South Australian distinction, displaying the outstanding quality characteristic of a time-honoured alternative expression of Shiraz — matured for 12 months in large, seasoned oak vats with no new oak influence, allowing the very essence of Shiraz to emerge slowly and gently with secrets that will reveal great joys over the next 20 to 50 years.
Aroma
The nose is complex and slowly, gently unfolding — blackberries and mulberries with fresh whipped cream of exceptional richness and depth, followed by crunchier red fruits of pomegranate and cranberry, a suggestion of mild paprika, a hint of liquorice, toasted fennel seed and dried mint of outstanding aromatic distinction. Meaty aromas of Greek lamb rubbed with olive oil, oregano and sea salt, savoury bresaola and prosciutto from the charcutier — an intense bouquet of black cherry, blackcurrant, roasted walnut, cacao and herb garden with cedar notes of rare and enduring Penfolds St Henri Shiraz character. Sophisticated, dark and almost mysterious.
Palate
A fine graphite core leads a palate of exceptional warmth and creaminess — venison loin, braised hare and the warmth of Mexican sauce giving way to sweet custard flavours of outstanding smoothness and textural distinction. Dark cacao tannins so fine they could be spun from silk, with a suggestion of fine salinity aligning with mouth-watering acidity of exceptional cleansing precision and enduring Penfolds St Henri Shiraz character. Rich, fleshy and generous with dark plum, dark chocolate, blackberry and mulberry flavours of outstanding depth and balance — restrained, with no need to be showy. Will age and evolve beautifully for decades.
Pairs With
This exceptional Penfolds St Henri Shiraz 2019 is a natural companion to venison loin, braised hare, Greek lamb on the rotisserie, bresaola, prosciutto, aged hard cheeses or enjoyed contemplatively on its own — where its dark fruits, silk tannins, fine salinity and mouth-watering acidity deliver a South Australian Shiraz experience of outstanding sophistication, mystery and enduring Penfolds St Henri distinction.

Winemaking Notes
Penfolds St Henri Shiraz 2019 is an unusual and time-honoured alternative expression of Shiraz — matured for 12 months in large, seasoned oak vats that impart minimal, if any, oak character, allowing the very essence of Shiraz to develop slowly and gently without the influence of new oak. A South Australian blend of McLaren Vale, Barossa Valley, Padthaway, Wrattonbully and The Peninsulas, with a small proportion of Cabernet occasionally sneaking into the blend — rich and plush when young, gaining soft, earthy, mocha-like characters with age. Wine analysis: 14.5% alc/vol, pH 3.62, acidity 6.6g/L. 750ml. When purchased as a case of 6, this wine is presented in a Penfolds branded wooden box.
Vintage Conditions
The 2019 vintage across South Australia delivered outstanding quality despite challenging conditions — McLaren Vale and Barossa Valley recorded well below long-term average winter rainfall, whilst vineyards in the South-East growing districts enjoyed above-average winter rainfall. September was cool with little rainfall, resulting in isolated frost events, and summer was generally hot with high temperatures delaying veraison. The Barossa Valley experienced 31 days exceeding 35°C whilst McLaren Vale experienced 25 days from December to March, with irrigation crucial to vine health. The proximity of the Southern Ocean played an important moderating role in Wrattonbully and Padthaway, allowing for a high-quality harvest of smaller than average yields. Although yields were down across all regions, the quality was outstanding — Shiraz showing excellent colours, firm tannin profiles and intense flavours of enduring Penfolds St Henri distinction.
Producer History
The first vintage of St Henri — then Auldana Cellars St Henri Claret — was produced in 1888, beginning one of the most famous and enduring names in Australian wine, likely named after winemaker Léon Edmond Mazure’s son Henri or his wife Philomine Henriette. The wine immediately enjoyed success, winning the Championship Cup for Best Claret in Australia at the Adelaide Wine Show in 1890 and again as joint winner in 1891. The St Henri label disappeared around the beginning of World War I before being revived by Senior Red Winemaker John Davoren at Penfolds in 1953 to celebrate the centenary of Auldana Cellars — with the 1957 vintage officially recognised as the first St Henri commercial release under the Penfolds name. It gained a new lease of life in the 1990s as its quality and distinctive no-new-oak style became better understood and celebrated worldwide.
