Production Info

Old Pulteney 16 Year Old is hand-crafted at Pulteney Distillery in Wick on the shores of north-eastern Scotland, where it is matured for 16 years, sitting firmly in the realms of single malt opulence. The specific cask selection combined with unique coastal influence creates a whisky defined by spice and intensity. Water is sourced from Loch Hempriggs, particularly pure and soft, carried via a lade designed by Scottish engineer Thomas Telford in 1807. The 100-year-old Porteus mill processes five tonnes of local un-peated malt barley into grist. The semi-lauter mash tun mixes grist with water over four cycles, extracting soluble sugars. Six stainless steel washbacks facilitate slow fermentation over 60 hours at 17°C. Two large copper stills – including a wash still with uniquely shaped boiling ball that inspired the iconic bottle shape – distil the spirit, which is conveyed through a traditional worm tub condenser adding strength to the flavour. Maturation occurs in carefully selected casks in traditional dunnage and racked warehouses where low temperature scales, high humidity and surrounding sea air shape the character, creating rich, warming full-on spicy fruitiness, honeyed vanilla, comforting chocolate, juicy spices and mouth-coating Christmas cake richness.

Distillery History

Pulteney Distillery was founded in 1826 by James Henderson in the newly developed Pulteneytown area of Wick, one of the most northerly distilleries on the Scottish mainland. Due to lack of conventional roads, it was only accessible by sea, with raw barley brought in by boat and whisky shipped out by distillery workers who were also herring fishermen. Throughout the 19th and early 20th century, Wick became Europe's largest herring fishing port. In 1920, residents voted for prohibition under the Temperance (Scotland) Act, and the distillery closed in 1930. Prohibition ended in 1947, and Robert 'Bertie' Cumming reopened production in 1951. Major refurbishment occurred in 1958 under J&G Stodart Ltd. In 1995, Inver House Distillers acquired the distillery, and in 1997 released the iconic Old Pulteney 12 Years Old. Today, the dedicated distillery team led by Malcolm Waring produces approximately 900,000 litres annually. Old Pulteney 16 Year Old showcases this heritage with amber appearance, rich warming spicy fruitiness, honeyed vanilla, comforting chocolate, juicy spices, mouth-coating Christmas cake richness and long, delicious finish – the Maritime Malt sitting firmly in the realms of single malt opulence.
