M. Chapoutier La Bernadine Châteauneuf-du-Pape 2023 is a complex, elegant, and deeply characterful expression of one of France’s most storied appellations — a Grenache-dominant blend with Syrah and Mourvèdre, sourced from Quaternary period terraces with large, round pebbles from the former Rhône riverbed, vinified traditionally in closed concrete tanks for maximum extraction, and aged for 15 months in concrete to preserve freshness and aromatic integrity. Intense crimson-red in colour, with a complex and subtle aroma of blackcurrant, plum, roasted coffee, cinnamon, cherry, and morello cherry; a palate filled with spicy and fruity notes of liquorice and ripe fruit; silky tannins and great finesse. A delightful and versatile wine from an appellation with papal heritage stretching back to 1308. Truly the wines of the Pope.

Tasting Notes

Appearance

Intense crimson-red — the deep, vibrant colour of a Châteauneuf-du-Pape crafted from Grenache-dominant fruit sourced from Quaternary period terraces with large, round pebbles from the former Rhône riverbed, with the richness and depth that traditional high-temperature vinification delivers.

Aroma

Complex and subtle — blackcurrant and plum on the nose, followed by roasted coffee and cinnamon, cherry, and morello cherry. A layered, expressive, and distinctly Southern Rhône bouquet that reflects the character of the appellation and the expertise of M. Chapoutier.

Palate

Spicy and fruity — liquorice, ripe cherry, and dark fruit filling the palate with the natural sweetness and elegance that Grenache brings to the blend, supported by the structure of Syrah and the depth of Mourvèdre. Silky tannins, great finesse, and a long, satisfying finish.

Pairs With

A natural companion for slow-roasted lamb, duck confit, wild boar, aged hard cheeses, and the finest Provençal table — M. Chapoutier La Bernadine is equally delightful with grilled meats, Mediterranean cuisine, and any occasion that calls for a wine of genuine complexity and versatility. Truly the wines of the Pope.

Winemaking Notes

The grapes are carefully selected during harvesting — compulsory to obtain the Appellation, this sorting ensures only the finest bunches are used. Traditional vinification is carried out in closed concrete tanks, with a vatting period of approximately 3 weeks at high temperature to ensure maximum extraction of colour and tannins. Ageing takes place in concrete tanks for 15 months to ensure good oxygenation of the wine, preserving its freshness and aromas. The Grenache brings natural sweetness, elegance, silky tannins, and great finesse to the blend; Syrah and Mourvèdre add structure and depth.

Vintage Conditions

The 2023 vintage in Châteauneuf-du-Pape produced wines of intense colour, complex aromatics, and excellent balance — with the Grenache-dominant La Bernadine blend showcasing the full depth and character of the appellation’s Quaternary period terraces, large round pebbles, Miocenian safres, and Villafrancian terraces on clay matrix.

Producer History

M. Chapoutier is one of the Rhône Valley’s most celebrated and respected négociants and domaines — a family-owned house with a history stretching back to 1808 and an unwavering commitment to biodynamic viticulture and the authentic expression of each appellation’s terroir. La Bernadine takes its name from the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation itself — an appellation whose history is inseparable from the papacy. In 1308, Pope Clément V moved the papacy to Avignon; under Pope Jean XXII, the wines of the region became known as the “Wines of the Pope” — a title that evolved into Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Jean XXII was also responsible for the construction of the Château that remains the symbol of the appellation today. Seven centuries of papal heritage. One extraordinary appellation. M. Chapoutier at its finest.
