Lowestoft Estate Pinot Noir 2023 is a 95-point Tasmanian Pinot Noir from winemaker Liam McElhinney — sourced from the Lower Derwent Valley and East Coast, with 25% whole bunch fermentation and 10 months in large-format French oak. Pure red cherry and red plum fruits daubed in fine spice, amaro herbs, forest floor, and light gamey tones, with sour cherry on the palate, fine chalky tannins, and a bright, lingering exit. Lowestoft have been on a roll, and the 2023 release sees that form continue unabated.

Appearance

Crimson with ruby hues — excellent clarity and depth of colour that hints at the wine’s concentration and the careful, minimal-intervention winemaking that defines Lowestoft Estate.

Aroma

Exotic spice and rosemary envelope the nose with a lifted current of juicy cherry, red berries, and bright pomegranate — the aromatic profile revealing the wine’s cool climate origins and the lift and complexity that 25% whole bunch fermentation contributes.

Palate

Layers of anise and five spice envelop the structured palate, intertwining with intense black plum and juicy dark cherries — bright red berry acidity and graceful, chalky tannins ensuring silky texture and persistent length. Sour cherry coming through on the finish with a bright, lingering exit. A Tasmanian Pinot Noir of genuine purity, elegance, and impressive length of flavour.

Pairs With

Roasted duck breast, mushroom risotto, grilled salmon, aged cheddar, charcuterie boards, or slow-cooked lamb shoulder — the silky texture and bright acidity make this equally enjoyable on its own. A versatile and genuinely elegant cool climate Pinot Noir for the table or the glass.

Winemaking Notes

Small parcels hand-picked from the Lowestoft estate vineyard in the Derwent Valley, the East Coast, and the Huon Valley. Batches fermented separately in open-top fermenters with up to 25% whole bunch fruit included — a technique that contributes aromatic lift and structural complexity. Gentle hand plunging and occasional pump-overs produced bright, concentrated colour and lifted perfume whilst preserving the delicate fruit character. The wine matured individually in large-format French oak (30% new) for 10 months prior to blending and bottling with minimal fining and filtration, ensuring the wine’s natural texture and flavour integrity remain intact. Will reward careful cellaring of seven to ten years.
