Tahbilk Estate Grenache Shiraz Mourvèdre 2024 is a richly flavoured, savoury expression of the classic Rhône-inspired blend from one of the Nagambie Lakes' most storied producers. Combining 46% Grenache, 40% Shiraz and 14% Mourvèdre, the 2024 delivers dark plum and berry fruit layered with liquorice, spice and earthy complexity, all carried by a juicy, supple texture and a persistent savoury finish. Approachable now and built to reward short-to-medium cellaring, this is Tahbilk's estate interpretation of a blend with a natural home in Nagambie's warm, continental climate.
Tasting Notes
Appearance: Deep ruby red.
Aroma: Dark plum, berry fruit and liquorice with savoury, spicy and earthy complexity.
Palate: Juicy and multilayered with balanced richness and structure. Spice and earthy savouriness weave through the fruit, with a persistent savoury and spicy finish.
Vineyard & Region
Tahbilk's estate vineyards are located in the Nagambie Lakes sub-region of Central Victoria, a warm continental wine region distinguished by its complex sandy loam and alluvial soils and the moderating influence of the Goulburn River and surrounding lakes. The Rhône varieties — Grenache, Shiraz and Mourvèdre — thrive here, finding the warmth they require for full ripeness while retaining the structure and complexity that make Nagambie red wines distinctive. Tahbilk has cultivated Shiraz on the estate since 1860, giving this GSM blend unusual depth of provenance for an Australian wine of its style and price.
Blend
46% Grenache, 40% Shiraz, 14% Mourvèdre.
Winemaking
Fermented using selected yeasts in open oak fermenters over seven days, a traditional method that encourages colour and tannin development alongside flavour complexity. Following fermentation, the wine was matured in a combination of large-format and smaller oak barriques, allowing the blend components to integrate and develop without overweighting the oak character.
2024 Growing Season
The 2024 growing season presented challenges across the Nagambie Lakes region. Notably, there were no days above 40°C, which assisted even and careful ripening. Harvest was compressed into approximately six weeks, commencing 12 February and concluding 21 March. Yields were slightly below average, while selected red parcels showed outstanding quality — a reminder that careful selection and viticulture can produce excellent results even in demanding seasons.
Cellaring & Serving
Drinking well now and best enjoyed through to approximately 2030. In WSD's view, this is a wine that rewards early drinking for its juicy, fresh fruit character while having the structure and concentration to develop over four to five years. Serve at 16–18°C, slightly below room temperature, to keep the fruit expressive and the structure in balance.
Food Pairing
A natural companion to the table. Slow-roasted lamb shoulder, barbecued lamb cutlets and roast beef are ideal. The wine's savoury, earthy complexity makes it equally at home alongside grilled sausages, Mediterranean dishes and hard aged cheeses such as Manchego or aged Cheddar.
