Kinglake O'Grady's Bourbon Cask Single Malt Whisky 700mL is Kinglake Distillery's most complex and characterful expression. Built on a four-malt bill — including a roasted chocolate malt and a heavily peated malt from the Scottish borders — and distilled to a deliberately heavy, oily spirit, Kinglake O'Grady's Bourbon Cask Single Malt Whisky is unlike anything else in Australian whisky. Aged in small-format ex-bourbon barrels, individually re-coopered in Australia, and bottled at 46% ABV.
Tasting Notes
Appearance
Deep amber with warm mahogany highlights, reflecting the influence of small-format ex-bourbon barrel maturation and the richness of the heavily cut spirit.
Aroma
Complex and layered. Peat smoke and dark chocolate lead, with vanilla and caramel from the ex-bourbon oak beneath. Dried fruit, roasted grain, and a distinctive earthy character from the open fermentation in the Kinglake Ranges.
Palate
Heavy and oily in texture — exactly as intended. Dark chocolate and peat smoke dominate, with vanilla sweetness, dried fruit, and warm spice from the oak. The finish is long, smoky, and complex, with lingering chocolate and peat notes that reward patience.
Serving Suggestion
Best enjoyed neat or with a few drops of still water to open the spirit. Allow to rest in the glass before nosing. The peat and chocolate character develops considerably with time in the glass.
Pairs With
Dark chocolate, smoked meats, aged hard cheese, and rich game dishes. Also outstanding as a contemplative dram on its own.
About Kinglake Distillery
Kinglake Distillery is located in the Kinglake Ranges, Victoria — an off-grid property designed to take advantage of its rural location. Their 2,500-litre copper pot-still was handmade by Tasmania's premier still-maker Knapp Lewer, engineered specifically to produce the heavy, flavourful spirit that defines the Kinglake style. Open washbacks expose the ferments to local Kinglake pollens and yeasts, contributing to the distinctive character of every expression. Water comes from a mountain stream rising on the distillery property — natural, pure, and unfiltered.
