Kalleske Greenock Shiraz 2024 is a single vineyard Barossa Valley Shiraz from low-yielding vines on the Kalleske estate at Greenock — cuttings originating from vines planted in the late 1800s, tended today by sixth and seventh generation family members. Profoundly deep and inky black, with rich fruit-cake, ripe plum, sweet and savoury spice, cedar, toasty oak, cocoa powder and treacle on the nose — immense yet impeccably balanced on the palate with sleek tannins and an almost endless finish. Tasting Notes

Appearance

Kalleske Greenock Shiraz 2024 presents a profoundly deep, inky black colour — the hallmark of a single vineyard Barossa Shiraz from low-yielding vines with cuttings originating from the late 1800s, tended by sixth and seventh generation Kalleske family members on the estate at Greenock in the North-Western Barossa Valley. Commanding and immediately impressive in the glass.

Aroma

It explodes from the glass with classic dark Shiraz aromatics — rich fruit-cake and ripe plum lead with depth and generosity, with layers of sweet and savoury spice, cedar, toasty oak, cocoa powder and treacle adding extraordinary complexity. A subtle note of warm earth grounds the bouquet with a sense of place that is unmistakably Greenock, unmistakably Barossa.

Palate

The full-bodied palate is immense yet impeccably balanced — waves of deep, dark fruit saturate the mouth, framed by prominent, finely driven, sleek tannins that provide a powerful but refined backbone. As the tannins gently assert their pleasant dryness, sweet fruits re-emerge, complemented by classy, integrated oak that adds further depth and complexity. The finish is almost endless, with fruit, oak and tannin in perfect harmony — a truly stunning Barossa Shiraz.

Pairs With

A natural match for slow-braised lamb shoulder, beef short rib, aged hard cheeses or a classic Barossa charcuterie board — equally outstanding alongside venison, duck confit or a rich mushroom ragu. The dark fruit, sleek tannins and integrated oak make this one of the most rewarding and cellar-worthy Shiraz expressions in the Barossa Valley. Drink now through 2039+.

Winemaking Notes

Kalleske Greenock Shiraz 2024 is sourced from the “Greenock” block on the Kalleske estate — de-stemmed into open top fermenters and fermented warm with hand pump-overs twice daily for 8 days on skins prior to pressing. After pressing, the wine was filled to a mix of 30% new and balance used American and French oak hogsheads, completing primary fermentation and undergoing natural malolactic fermentation in barrel. Matured in barrel for fourteen months prior to bottling. Traditional winemaking by Troy and Tony Kalleske, first crafted in the inaugural Kalleske vintage in 2002. 14.5% alc. 750ml. Barossa Valley, South Australia.

Vintage Conditions

2024 was an excellent vintage in the Barossa Valley. Winter and spring were drier and slightly warmer than average, leading to earlier budburst, flowering and veraison. Summer welcomed refreshing rainfall and average temperatures with no extreme heat, ensuring the vines flourished with balanced crop loads and apt canopy for steady ripening. Autumn began warm and finished mild, continuing consistent ripening until harvest was completed in mid-autumn. Overall yields were average and quality superb — a stellar vintage for the Greenock Shiraz with the structure and poise to evolve beautifully over the next 10–15+ years. Kalleske, Barossa Valley, South Australia.
