Rutherglen Estate Sangiovese 2024 is crafted by winemaker Marc Scalzo from De Bortoli’s Shelley’s and Melville’s vineyards on the eastern edge of the Rutherglen region. A multi-clone Sangiovese of elegance and character from what promises to be one of the standout vintages of the last ten years. Vibrant red with brick red hues, aromas of red berries, cherries, spice, and dried herbs, with balanced cherry and strawberry varietal characters on the palate, mouth-coating powdery tannins, and a quaffable savoury finish.

Appearance

Vibrant red with brick red hues — the classic, inviting colour of a Rutherglen Sangiovese from multiple clones grown on gravel, clay, and alluvial soils, harvested in the cool of the morning and fermented on skins for seven days for optimal colour and tannin extraction.

Aroma

Red berries, cherries, and spice with nuances of dried herbs — the expressive, elegant bouquet of a multi-clone Sangiovese from Shelley’s and Melville’s vineyards, where the original plantings of two different Sangiovese clones and the highly regarded MAT7 clone combine to add complexity and aromatic depth.

Palate

Balanced cherry and strawberry varietal characters with integrated oak — supported by mouth-coating powdery tannins and a quaffable savoury finish. Elegant, approachable, and deeply enjoyable, with the structure to cellar gracefully for up to eight years.

Pairs With

Pizza, pasta, and traditional Italian cuisine — hearty homemade minestrone with parmesan and crusty white bread, bruschetta, lightly cured meats, and vegetables. Sangiovese’s natural affinity for Italian food is on full display here, with the powdery tannins and savoury finish making Rutherglen Estate Sangiovese a deeply natural and satisfying partner for the table.

Winemaking Notes

Grapes harvested and crushed in the cool of the morning before fermenting on skins for seven days. Pressed and aged for ten months in a mix of older French and American hogsheads and puncheons — time in oak chosen to accentuate the bright cherry notes and naturally spicy and savoury characters whilst helping to soften the chewy tannins. Vegan and vegetarian friendly. 14% ABV. pH: 3.53. TA: 5.86 g/L. Cellaring: 2–8 years.

Vintage Conditions

Rutherglen experienced a wetter than average spring and very mild, consistent temperatures — ideal growing conditions in which the vines flourished through December and January without any extreme events. The season started one week earlier than average, with all whites coming in disease free and with good varietal flavours. From February, no significant rainfall and consistently warmer than average temperatures concentrated and intensified the red grapes whilst maintaining their freshness. All reds were picked in optimal condition. The 2024 vintage promises to be one of the standout vintages of the last ten years.

Producer History

Rutherglen Estate is the home of De Bortoli’s Rutherglen operation — a winery with deep roots in one of Victoria’s most historically significant wine regions, celebrated for its fortified wines but increasingly recognised for the quality of its table wines from varieties like Sangiovese that thrive in the region’s warm continental climate. Winemaker Marc Scalzo sources from De Bortoli’s Shelley’s and Melville’s vineyards on the eastern edge of the region — sites with an interesting gravel, clay, and alluvial soil mix that are home to the original Sangiovese clone plantings and the highly regarded MAT7 clone. Rutherglen Sangiovese. Crafted with care. Ready for the table.
