Appearance
Ruby red with deep intensity.
Aroma
Brooding spices of black cracked pepper, clove and aniseed with red and dark berry undertones.
Palate
Juicy red and dark cherries with braised dark plum. Dark earthy spices of pepper, aniseed, dark liquorice, cinnamon, clove and bay leaf add layers of complexity. Medium-bodied with soft, melting tannins adding length and dimension.

Vintage Conditions
The 2022 vintage began with a very cool spring, misty conditions and low-hanging fog. Flowering was slow — typical for Great Western following the larger 2021 vintage — and low crop levels resulted in high concentration of flavour across the vineyards. Multiple critics have cited 2022 as a classic Great Western vintage.
Winemaking
The wine was made using whole-berry fermentation with a small proportion of whole bunches, then matured for 14 months in puncheons and large vats with 5% new French oak — a large-format approach that contributes structure while preserving the fruit and regional spice character.
Food Pairing
Best’s recommends Greek-style slow-roasted lamb. The wine’s medium body, fine tannins and spice character also suit beef, braised dishes and robust pasta with meat sauces.
