Tasting Notes

Bell's Blended Scotch Whisky 700mL delivers rich, spicy ginger cake and chocolate notes with a distinctive smoky finish, crafted at Scotland's historic Blair Athol distillery since 1798.

Bell's Extra Special is a masterful blend of Scotland's finest grain and malt whiskies, matured in carefully selected oak casks to develop its characteristically rich flavour profile. This iconic Scotch whisky represents over 175 years of blending expertise, combining malts from Blair Athol, Caol Ila, and Glenkinchie distilleries.

Appearance

Warm amber with golden highlights, displaying excellent clarity and medium viscosity that coats the glass beautifully.

Aroma

The nose opens with inviting notes of spiced ginger cake and sweet vanilla, complemented by hints of toasted oak and a subtle wisp of peat smoke. Delicate floral undertones emerge with time, alongside gentle honey and dried fruit nuances.

Palate

Medium-bodied and smooth, the palate reveals layers of rich chocolate, warming ginger spice, and sweet malt. Oak influence provides structure, whilst the blend's smoky character builds gradually, balanced by notes of toffee and biscuit. The mouthfeel is pleasingly creamy with a gentle warmth.

Pairs With

Pairs with hearty Scottish fare such as smoked salmon, mature cheddar cheese, and rich chocolate desserts. The classic serve combines Bell's with ginger ale over ice for a refreshing, spicy-sweet highball that perfectly complements the whisky's natural ginger cake character.

Distillery Production Notes

Bell's Extra Special is crafted through the meticulous blending of carefully selected grain and fine malt whiskies, each matured in premium oak casks to develop the blend's signature rich and complex flavour profile. The production process honours traditional Scottish blending techniques established over 175 years ago, combining distinguished malts from Blair Athol (the blend's heart), alongside contributions from Caol Ila and Glenkinchie distilleries. Each cask is chosen for its ability to impart depth and character, with the oak maturation process developing the whisky's distinctive notes of spiced ginger cake, chocolate, and gentle smoke. The master blenders maintain exacting standards to ensure consistency and quality in every bottle, preserving the heritage that has made Bell's one of Scotland's most respected blended whiskies.

Distillery Information

Blair Athol Distillery, the spiritual home of Bell's whisky, stands as one of Scotland's oldest working distilleries, established in 1798 in the heart of Perthshire. The Bell's story began in 1825 when Thomas Sandeman founded the business, later passing through the hands of James Roy and Alex Miller before Arthur Bell joined as a traveller in 1845, becoming a partner in 1851. By 1895, Bell and his two sons had registered the Extra Special brand as a trademark, with the iconic 'Arthur Bell & Sons' signature following in 1896. Today, Bell's is owned by Diageo, the world's leading premium drinks company, which continues to honour the brand's rich heritage and traditional blending expertise. The distillery's historic phrase "AFORE YE GO" – meaning "before you go" – still graces every bottle neck, a reminder of the Scottish tradition of staying a little longer to share a dram. This family business legacy has stood the test of time, maintaining its commitment to consistent quality and passion for creating exceptional blended Scotch whisky enjoyed worldwide.
