Tamburlaine Organic Wines — Australia's Largest Certified Organic Wine Producer
Tamburlaine is one of Australia's most pioneering and respected organic wine producers — a Hunter Valley winery with over 50 years of winemaking experience that has established itself as the country's largest certified organic wine grape producer and a genuine leader in the global organic wine movement. With a commitment to farming without synthetic chemicals or pesticides, a dedication to preservative-free and vegan-friendly winemaking, and a diverse range of wines sourced from some of New South Wales' finest cool-climate regions, Tamburlaine produces wines that are as good for the planet as they are for the palate.
History & Heritage
Tamburlaine was established in the Hunter Valley — one of Australia's oldest and most celebrated wine regions — and has been producing wine for over five decades. The winery's transition to certified organic viticulture was driven by a deep conviction that the best wines come from the healthiest vineyards, and that the health of the land is inseparable from the quality of the wine it produces. Over the years, Tamburlaine has grown its certified organic vineyard holdings to become the largest certified organic wine grape producer in Australia — a distinction that reflects both the scale of the commitment and the extraordinary quality of the fruit it produces.
Tamburlaine's organic certification is not merely a marketing position — it is the foundation of everything the winery does. Every vineyard in the Tamburlaine network is farmed without synthetic herbicides, pesticides, or fungicides, using instead a combination of cover crops, composting, biological pest management, and careful canopy management to maintain vine health and soil vitality. The result is vineyards of extraordinary biodiversity and soil health — living, thriving ecosystems that produce grapes of genuine character and terroir expression.
Preservative-Free & Vegan Winemaking
Tamburlaine's commitment to natural, minimal-intervention winemaking extends from the vineyard into the cellar. The majority of the Tamburlaine range is produced without the addition of sulphur dioxide — the preservative (numbered 220 on Australian wine labels) that is used in virtually all conventional wine production to prevent oxidation and microbial spoilage. Producing wine without added sulphur requires exceptional fruit quality, meticulous cellar hygiene, and a winemaking approach of extraordinary care and precision — conditions that Tamburlaine's certified organic viticulture and experienced winemaking team are uniquely positioned to deliver.
All Tamburlaine wines are also vegan-friendly — produced without the use of animal-derived fining agents such as egg whites, casein (milk protein), isinglass (fish bladder), or gelatine that are commonly used in conventional wine production to clarify and stabilise the wine. Instead, Tamburlaine uses plant-based or mineral fining agents, or relies on natural settling and filtration to achieve clarity without compromising the wine's natural character.
The Regions
Hunter Valley, in the lower Hunter region of New South Wales approximately 160 kilometres north of Sydney, is one of Australia's oldest and most historically significant wine regions. The Hunter's warm, humid climate and distinctive red clay and sandy loam soils produce wines of a unique and immediately recognisable character — most famously the region's celebrated Semillon and Shiraz, but also a range of other varieties that benefit from the Hunter's distinctive terroir.
Orange, in the Central Ranges of New South Wales at elevations of 600–900 metres above sea level, is one of Australia's most exciting and rapidly emerging cool-climate wine regions. The high altitude moderates temperatures significantly, producing a growing season that is cooler and longer than the surrounding lowlands, with the natural acidity, aromatic complexity, and structural elegance that define cool-climate wines. Tamburlaine's Orange vineyards are the source of the Au Naturel Premium Cuvée sparkling, the Sauvignon Blanc, and the Cabernet Merlot — wines that showcase the extraordinary potential of this high-altitude region for producing wines of genuine freshness and character.
Hilltops, in the Southern Tablelands of New South Wales at elevations of 400–600 metres, is a cool-climate region of growing reputation, particularly for Pinot Noir, Shiraz, and Cabernet Sauvignon. Tamburlaine's Hilltops Pinot Noir demonstrates the region's ability to produce wines of genuine cool-climate elegance and complexity.

Why Choose Organic Wine?
Organic wines offer a range of benefits that extend well beyond the absence of synthetic chemicals. Certified organic viticulture promotes biodiversity and soil health — creating living, thriving vineyard ecosystems that produce grapes of greater character and terroir expression. Organic farming practices build soil organic matter over time, improving water retention, drainage, and the mineral richness that contributes to wine quality. And for those who are sensitive to sulphites — the preservatives added to most conventional wines — Tamburlaine's preservative-free range offers a genuinely natural alternative without compromising on flavour, quality, or enjoyment.
How to Enjoy Tamburlaine Organic Wines
