Sons of Eden — The Barossa & Eden Valley's Most Distinctive Shiraz Producer
Sons of Eden is one of the Barossa Valley's most celebrated and philosophically distinctive wine producers — a winery built on a deep reverence for old vines, minimal intervention winemaking, and the extraordinary diversity of terroir that exists across the Barossa and Eden Valley. Founded by winemakers Corey Ryan and Marc Dobler, Sons of Eden produces wines of genuine depth, character, and regional authenticity that have earned the admiration of critics and collectors across Australia and around the world.
History & Philosophy
Sons of Eden was established with a clear and uncompromising vision: to produce wines that are a true and honest expression of the Barossa and Eden Valley's extraordinary old vine heritage, crafted with minimal intervention and maximum respect for the fruit and the land from which it comes. Every wine in the range is named in tribute to a person, deity, or legend whose character and story reflects the nature of the wine itself — a philosophy that gives the Sons of Eden range a narrative depth and personality that is entirely its own.
The winery's commitment to old vines is central to everything it does. The Romulus and Remus Shirazes are sourced exclusively from vineyards over 50 years of age, managed sustainably by families who have tended the same vines for generations. The Kennedy GSM draws its Grenache from Leo ‘Joe’ Kennedy's Light Pass vineyard — vines of over 60 years of age that produce fruit of extraordinary concentration and character. This connection to the Barossa's old vine heritage is not merely a marketing position — it is the foundation of the wines' quality and the source of their extraordinary depth and complexity.
Sons of Eden's winemaking philosophy is built on minimal intervention: hand harvesting, small open-top fermenters, cold soaking to extract colour and flavour before fermentation begins, careful cap management, extended skin contact, and maturation in French oak without racking — allowing the wine to develop naturally and express its full character without interference. All wines are naturally clarified and bottled without filtration, preserving the integrity and complexity of the fruit.
The Regions: Barossa Valley & Eden Valley, South Australia
Sons of Eden draws fruit from two of South Australia's most celebrated wine regions — the Barossa Valley and the Eden Valley — which together form one of the world's great wine-producing landscapes.
Barossa Valley is Australia's most celebrated red wine region and the spiritual home of Sons of Eden. The valley's warm continental climate, ancient low-yielding old vines, and diverse soils — from the sandy soils of Tanunda that produce aromatic, elegant Shiraz to the iron-clad soils of Ebenezer that deliver a dense, powerful fruit core — produce wines of extraordinary concentration, richness, and depth. Barossa Shiraz is the benchmark of Australian red wine, and Sons of Eden's expressions are among the finest examples of the style.
Eden Valley, situated in the Mount Lofty Ranges above the Barossa at elevations of 400–500 metres, is a cooler, higher-altitude region that produces Shiraz of a markedly different character — more refined, more fragrant, and more structured than the valley floor, with characteristic forest herb, spice, and red fruit notes alongside the blackberry and dark cherry of the warmer sites. The Zephyrus Shiraz draws on fruit from both regions — 44% Eden Valley and 56% Barossa Valley — to create a wine of exceptional complexity and balance. The Remus Shiraz is sourced exclusively from Eden Valley old vine sites, producing a wine of harmonious richness and lively, precise freshness.
The cooling westerly winds that sweep across the Barossa and Eden Valley during the growing season — honoured in the name of the Zephyrus Shiraz, named for Zephyrus, the Greek God of the West Wind — are a critical moderating influence, preventing the extreme heat events that can affect less fortunate sites and allowing the grapes to ripen slowly and evenly while retaining natural acidity and aromatic complexity.
Our Range
Sons of Eden Marschall Shiraz — Barossa Valley — Named in tribute to David Marschall — a legendary Barossa vigneron, actor, martial artist, and demolition expert — the Marschall Shiraz is the entry point to the Sons of Eden range and a wine of genuine character and approachability. Sourced from vineyards in Tanunda (sandy soils, aromatic style) and Ebenezer (iron-clad soils, dense fruit core). Extended skin contact of 15–20 days, cold soak up to five days, matured 14 months in new and seasoned oak hogsheads, naturally clarified, bottled without filtration. Deep garnet with dark cherry and wild berry aromas. Intense and juicy dark red berry flavours with velvety tannins. Enjoyable now but capable of ageing well in the medium to long term.
Sons of Eden Zephyrus Shiraz — Barossa & Eden Valley — Named for Zephyrus, the Greek God of the West Wind, in honour of the cooling westerly winds that create ideal ripening conditions across the Barossa and Eden Valley. Sourced from ten unique vineyard sites (44% Eden Valley, 56% Barossa Valley) with 10–35% whole-bunch clusters retained. 12–18 days on skins, matured 16 months in new (35%) and conditioned French oak hogsheads, blended, naturally clarified, bottled without finings or filtration. Deep crimson with wild berries and red spices. Intense berry flavours balanced by refined tannins and a crisp, lingering finish. A modern Barossa Shiraz crafted to develop complexity and elegance with age.
Sons of Eden Romulus Shiraz — Barossa Valley — Named for Romulus, the stronger and more powerful of the legendary twin founders of Rome, the Romulus Shiraz is sourced exclusively from Barossa Valley vineyards over 50 years of age, managed sustainably by families who have tended the same vines for generations. Hand harvested into small 1.5-tonne open-top fermenters, chilled for five days before natural warming initiates fermentation, 20 days on skins, pressed to new (45%) and seasoned French oak hogsheads, matured 18 months without racking, naturally clarified, bottled without filtration. Deep crimson with ripe cherry, plum, and lifted red liquorice aromas. Richly concentrated with excellent balance and length. A wine of full-flavoured complexity and long-term cellaring potential.
Sons of Eden Remus Shiraz — Eden Valley — Named for Remus, the more refined and focused of the legendary twins, the Remus Shiraz is sourced exclusively from Eden Valley vineyards over 50 years of age. Hand harvested into small 1.5-tonne open-top fermenters with up to 15% whole-bunch clusters, pre-fermentation cold soak, hand plunged daily, extended skin contact, pressed to 60% new French oak hogsheads, matured 18 months without racking, naturally clarified, bottled without filtration. Deep garnet with blackberry and red cherry aromas complemented by forest herbs and spice. Harmonious richness and intensity on the palate, finishing with lively and precise freshness. The more elegant and structured counterpart to the Romulus.
Sons of Eden Kennedy GSM — Barossa Valley — Named in tribute to the Kennedy family and Leo ‘Joe’ Kennedy, whose Light Pass vineyard — with vines of over 60 years of age — provides the Grenache fruit at the heart of this blend. A blend of Grenache, Shiraz, and Mourvèdre, all hand harvested and fermented separately before blending. Cold soaked prior to fermentation; Grenache and Mourvèdre left on skins for 11 days post-ferment, pressed to large oak puncheons, matured 12 months with minimal intervention, naturally clarified, bottled. Deep crimson with vibrant aromas of wild berries and intricate sweet spice. Juicy red fruits balanced by complementary sweet spices, soft velvety tannins, and a subtle savoury nuance on the finish. A refined and expressive GSM of genuine character.
How to Enjoy Sons of Eden Wines
All Sons of Eden wines are best served at 16–18°C in a generous red wine glass. The Marschall and Kennedy GSM are approachable upon release and pair beautifully with grilled red meats, slow-cooked lamb, and hearty pasta dishes. The Zephyrus rewards decanting for 30 minutes and is outstanding with roasted lamb, duck, and dishes with earthy depth. The Romulus and Remus are wines of genuine cellaring potential — decant for at least an hour before serving, or cellar for five to fifteen years to allow their full complexity to emerge. All five wines are outstanding partners for the table and reward the patience of those who give them time.
