Rutherglen is one of north-east Victoria's most celebrated wine regions, with a winemaking tradition stretching back to the 1850s. The region has built an international reputation around its distinctive fortified wines — particularly Muscat and Topaque — alongside richly flavoured reds from Durif, Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon. A warm continental climate, long dry autumns and a community of multi-generational producers define Rutherglen's character and the wines it produces.

Fortified Wines

Rutherglen Muscat and Rutherglen Topaque are among Australia's most distinctive regional wine styles. Both are produced under a four-tier classification — Rutherglen, Classic, Grand and Rare — with average age and complexity increasing at each level. Extended barrel maturation and solera-style blending create wines of remarkable concentration and depth, from approachable entry-level expressions through to rare, decades-old releases from producers such as Campbells, Morris of Rutherglen, Chambers Rosewood Vineyards and Stanton & Killeen.

Red Wines

Durif is one of Rutherglen's defining red varieties, producing deeply coloured, structured wines with considerable ageing potential. Shiraz is firmly established across the region, typically full-flavoured and rich, while Campbells, Buller Wines, Warrabilla and De Bortoli each bring their own expression to these regional varieties. Cabernet Sauvignon, Sparkling Shiraz and a broader range of varieties — including Sangiovese, Tempranillo and Marsanne — reflect the diversity of Rutherglen's vineyards beyond its fortified and red-wine traditions.

Rutherglen Whisky

Rutherglen's drinks tradition also extends beyond wine. Morris of Rutherglen produces Australian single malt whisky in the region, extending a drinks-making heritage long associated with Rutherglen wine into another category.

Rutherglen's producer community includes some of Australia's best-known names in fortified wine and regional winemaking.
