Collection: Nanny Goat Vineyard | Central Otago Pinot Noir
Nanny Goat Vineyard — Central Otago's Most Expressive Pinot Noir
Nanny Goat Vineyard is one of Central Otago's most celebrated and distinctive wine producers — a New Zealand winery that has built a devoted international following for its expressive, complex, and age-worthy Pinot Noir. Drawing on fruit from multiple sub-regions across Central Otago's extraordinary landscape — including the estate's own Queensberry and Bendigo vineyards and a network of carefully selected growers throughout Pisa and Bannockburn — Nanny Goat produces wines that are a genuine and comprehensive expression of one of the world's great Pinot Noir regions.
The Region: Central Otago, New Zealand
Central Otago is one of the world's most celebrated and geographically dramatic cool-climate wine regions — a landlocked, mountainous region in the south of New Zealand's South Island, approximately 450 kilometres south of Christchurch, that produces Pinot Noir of extraordinary intensity, complexity, and character. The region is the southernmost wine-producing area in the world, and its extreme continental climate — hot summers, cold winters, and dramatic diurnal temperature variation — creates ideal conditions for producing Pinot Noir of exceptional concentration, natural acidity, and aromatic complexity.
Unlike most of the world's great wine regions, which are moderated by the proximity of the ocean, Central Otago is a landlocked, high-altitude region surrounded by the Southern Alps and the Remarkables mountain range. The region's continental climate — with summer temperatures regularly exceeding 30°C during the day and dropping to single figures at night — creates a diurnal temperature variation of extraordinary magnitude that is central to the character of Central Otago Pinot Noir. The warm days allow the grapes to ripen fully and develop the concentration and depth of flavour that define the regional style; the cold nights preserve the natural acidity, aromatic complexity, and structural elegance that allow the wines to age magnificently.
Central Otago's soils are as diverse and distinctive as its climate. The region's geology is dominated by ancient schist — a metamorphic rock formed under intense heat and pressure deep within the earth's crust — that weathers to produce the free-draining, mineral-rich soils that are the foundation of Central Otago's extraordinary wine quality. The schist soils retain heat during the day and release it slowly at night, moderating the dramatic temperature swings of the continental climate and contributing to the even, consistent ripening that produces Pinot Noir of exceptional quality.
Central Otago is divided into a number of distinct sub-regions, each with its own distinctive character, elevation, and soil profile. Nanny Goat draws on fruit from four of the most celebrated:
Queensberry — Located in the upper Clutha Valley, Queensberry is one of Central Otago's most elevated and coolest sub-regions, producing Pinot Noir of exceptional elegance, aromatic complexity, and natural acidity. Nanny Goat's own Queensberry Vineyard is one of the estate's most important and distinctive sites.
Bendigo — Situated on the eastern shores of Lake Dunstan, Bendigo is one of Central Otago's warmest and most productive sub-regions, producing Pinot Noir of greater richness, concentration, and depth than the cooler elevated sites. Nanny Goat's own Bendigo Vineyard is the source of the richest and most concentrated fruit in the regional blend.
Pisa — Located on the western shores of Lake Dunstan, Pisa is a sub-region of growing reputation, producing Pinot Noir of distinctive character and mineral precision from its ancient schist and loess soils.
Bannockburn — One of Central Otago's most celebrated and historically significant sub-regions, Bannockburn produces Pinot Noir of extraordinary complexity, depth, and longevity from its ancient schist soils and the warm, sheltered microclimate of the Kawarau Gorge.
Winemaking
Nanny Goat's winemaking philosophy is built on minimal intervention and the careful expression of each sub-region's distinctive character. Fruit is hand-picked at optimal ripeness and predominantly destemmed into small 4.2-tonne open-top fermenters, with up to 30% whole bunches included in some ferments to add structural complexity, spice, and the characteristic savouriness that whole-bunch fermentation imparts to Pinot Noir. Fermentation is initiated by naturally occurring indigenous yeasts — a commitment to minimal intervention that allows the terroir of each sub-region to express itself without the influence of commercial yeast strains. Two light plunges daily at peak fermentation gently extract colour, tannin, and flavour from the skins without over-extracting harsh phenolics. After 24 to 32 days on skins — an extended maceration that develops the wine's colour, tannin structure, and complexity — the wine is pressed directly into 225-litre French oak barrels for maturation.
Nanny Goat Central Otago Pinot Noir
A regional blend of fruit from Nanny Goat's own Queensberry and Bendigo vineyards alongside fruit from carefully selected growers throughout Queensberry, Bendigo, Pisa, and Bannockburn — a wine that captures the full breadth and complexity of Central Otago's extraordinary Pinot Noir landscape in a single, harmonious expression. Bright ruby-red with excellent clarity. Layered and intriguing on the nose with primary aromas of wild blackberry, blackcurrant, and ripe raspberries, with nuances of toasted baking spices, forest floor, and a subtle floral note. Vibrant on the palate with a core of juicy wild berries, red cherry, and tamarillo. Cola and toasted spices add layers of interest to the mid-palate. Fine-grained tannin with a sinewy thread entwining the palate. Balanced acidity and a long, lingering finish. Cellaring potential of 10 years or more. Outstanding with duck, roast chicken, grilled salmon, mushroom risotto, aged brie, charcuterie, and lamb.
How to Enjoy Nanny Goat Pinot Noir
Best served at 14–16°C in a generous Burgundy-style glass. Allow 20–30 minutes of breathing after opening, or decant for 30 minutes to open the full aromatic complexity of this multi-sub-region blend. The wine is approachable upon release but has the structure, concentration, and natural acidity to develop beautifully in the cellar for a decade or more — a wine that rewards patience as much as it rewards immediate enjoyment.
