Collection: Don Julio | Premium Mexican Tequila
Don Julio — The World's First Luxury Tequila
Don Julio is one of the most celebrated and iconic tequila brands in the world — a producer of exceptional, handcrafted spirits that transformed the global perception of tequila from a rough, utilitarian drink into a category of genuine luxury, complexity, and prestige. Founded in 1942 by the visionary Don Julio González in the highlands of Jalisco, Mexico, Don Julio is credited with creating the world's first luxury tequila and establishing the benchmark for premium agave spirits that endures to this day.
History & Heritage
The story of Don Julio begins in 1942, when a young Don Julio González — just 17 years old — saw a unique opportunity in the production of tequila. Securing a loan, he established his first distillery in the Los Altos highlands of Jalisco and set about producing tequila with a level of care, quality, and ambition that was entirely without precedent in the industry at the time.
Don Julio broke with generations of tradition in ways both practical and philosophical. He was among the first producers to space his agave plants further apart, allowing each plant to receive more sunlight and nutrients and to develop greater sugar concentration and flavour complexity. He insisted on harvesting only fully mature agave — waiting the full eight to ten years for the plants to reach peak ripeness rather than harvesting early for the sake of volume. And he designed a shorter, wider bottle so that guests could pass it around the table without obscuring one another's faces — a small but telling detail that spoke of his belief that tequila was a spirit to be shared, celebrated, and savoured in good company.
In 1985, Don Julio created a special tequila for his 60th birthday celebration — a smooth, aged expression that he shared only with family and close friends. This tequila was so exceptional that it became the foundation of the Don Julio range as it exists today. The brand was later acquired by Diageo, which has preserved Don Julio's founding philosophy while giving it the global reach to share his vision with tequila lovers in over 100 countries.
The Region: Los Altos Highlands, Jalisco, Mexico
Don Julio's agave is grown exclusively in the Los Altos — the highlands — of Jalisco, Mexico, at elevations of 2,000 metres or more above sea level. This high-altitude region, with its distinctive red clay soils, cool nights, warm days, and abundant rainfall, produces Blue Weber agave of exceptional quality and character that is markedly different from the agave grown in the lowland valleys of Jalisco.
The Los Altos highlands' red clay soils are rich in iron and minerals, imparting a distinctive sweetness and complexity to the agave that grows in them. The region's cool nights slow the growth of the agave plants, allowing them to develop greater sugar concentration and more complex flavour compounds over their long maturation period. The result is agave that is sweeter, more aromatic, and more complex than lowland agave — the foundation of Don Julio's signature smooth, rich, and flavourful character.
Blue Weber agave — the only variety permitted in the production of tequila — takes eight to ten years to reach full maturity in the Los Altos highlands. Don Julio's jimadores — the skilled agave harvesters who have passed their craft down through generations — harvest each plant by hand at the peak of ripeness, using a traditional tool called a coa to remove the spiky leaves and reveal the dense, sugar-rich heart of the plant, known as the piña.
Production & Distillation
Once harvested, the piñas are slow-cooked in traditional stone ovens for 72 hours to convert the complex starches into fermentable sugars — a process that also develops the characteristic roasted agave flavours that define the Don Julio style. The cooked agave is then crushed to extract the sweet juice, which is fermented using proprietary yeast strains before being double-distilled in copper pot stills to produce a spirit of exceptional purity and character.
The resulting tequila is then either bottled immediately as Blanco, or aged in American white oak barrels — previously used for bourbon — for varying periods depending on the expression. The interaction between the spirit and the oak develops colour, complexity, and the vanilla, caramel, and spice notes that characterise Don Julio's aged expressions.
Tequila Classifications
Blanco — Unaged or rested for fewer than 60 days. The purest expression of the agave, showcasing the raw character of the spirit without oak influence. Crisp, vibrant, and intensely aromatic.
Reposado — Aged between two months and one year in oak barrels. A bridge between the freshness of Blanco and the complexity of Añejo, with the agave character complemented by gentle oak influence.
Añejo — Aged between one and three years in oak barrels. Rich, complex, and deeply flavoured, with the agave character integrated with significant oak, vanilla, and caramel notes.
Extra Añejo — Aged for more than three years. The most complex and luxurious category, producing tequilas of extraordinary depth, smoothness, and sophistication.
Our Range
Don Julio Blanco 750mL — The foundation of the Don Julio range and the purest expression of Los Altos agave. Crystal clear with a crisp agave flavour and bright hints of lemon, lime, and grapefruit. The essential tequila for a perfect Margarita, equally outstanding neat or over ice.
Don Julio Reposado 750mL — Aged for eight months in American white oak barrels. Golden amber in colour with lemony citrus and stone fruit on the nose. Soft and elegant on the palate with hints of dark chocolate, vanilla, and cinnamon. A beautifully balanced tequila that bridges freshness and complexity — outstanding in a refreshing cocktail or chilled on the rocks.
Don Julio 1942 Añejo 750mL — A small-batch añejo handcrafted in tribute to the year Don Julio González began his tequila-making journey, aged for a minimum of two and a half years. Deep, warm amber in colour. Rich caramel and chocolate on the nose, with warm oak, vanilla, and roasted agave on the palate and a long, lingering finish of oak and vanilla. One of the world's most celebrated and gifted tequilas — best enjoyed neat or over a single large ice cube, or in a premium Tequila Old Fashioned.
Don Julio Rosado Reposado 750mL — A limited edition expression of extraordinary elegance and originality. A reposado tequila finished in Ruby Port wine casks, imparting a subtle and beautiful pink colour alongside flavours of dried red fruits and caramel with unmatched smoothness. Best served over ice or with a splash of club soda and a lemon garnish — a tequila of genuine distinction for special occasions.
Don Julio Ultima Reserva Extra Añejo 750mL — The pinnacle of the Don Julio range and one of the most extraordinary tequilas in the world. Aged for 36 months using a Solera ageing system — the same method used in the production of the finest Sherry and Brandy — and finished in Madeira wine-seasoned casks previously used to age bourbon. Created to preserve the final agave harvest from Don Julio's last field, planted in 2006. Notes of toasted oak and caramel with hints of apricot and orange, and a smooth, honeyed agave finish of extraordinary length and complexity. A collector's expression of the highest order.
How to Enjoy Don Julio
The Blanco is the essential cocktail tequila — the foundation of a perfect Margarita (Blanco, fresh lime juice, triple sec, salt rim), a Paloma (Blanco, fresh grapefruit juice, soda, salt), or a Tommy's Margarita (Blanco, lime, agave syrup). The Reposado is outstanding in a Tequila Sour or enjoyed neat over ice. The 1942 Añejo is best savoured neat or in a Tequila Old Fashioned — a measure of 1942, a sugar cube, Angostura bitters, and an orange twist. The Rosado is magnificent over ice with soda and lemon. The Ultima Reserva deserves to be savoured slowly, neat, in a tulip-shaped glass — a spirit of such rarity and complexity that it demands nothing less than full attention.
