Collection: Bellbrae Estate | Bellarine Peninsula & Surf Coast Pinot Noir
Bellbrae Estate — Cool-Climate Pinot Noir from Victoria's Surf Coast
Bellbrae Estate is one of Victoria's most distinctive and celebrated cool-climate wineries — a Bellarine Peninsula estate with roots in the early 1990s that has built a passionate following for its elegant, terroir-driven Pinot Noir. Situated on the picturesque Surf Coast of Victoria, where the cool maritime influence of Bass Strait and Port Phillip Bay creates ideal conditions for producing wines of exceptional freshness, purity, and cool-climate character, Bellbrae Estate produces wines that are a genuine and authentic expression of one of Australia's most exciting emerging wine regions.
History & Philosophy
Bellbrae Estate was established in the early 1990s on the Bellarine Peninsula — a region that was then only beginning to attract serious attention as a cool-climate wine-growing area, but which has since established itself as one of Victoria's most exciting and rapidly developing wine regions. The estate's founders recognised the extraordinary potential of the Bellarine Peninsula's ancient volcanic soils, cool maritime climate, and the moderating influence of Bass Strait for producing wines of genuine finesse and regional character — and the decades since have vindicated that vision many times over.
The winemaking philosophy at Bellbrae Estate is built on a commitment to minimal intervention, hand-harvesting, and the careful expression of the estate's unique terroir. Every grape is hand-harvested at optimal ripeness and carefully sorted before gentle processing, with fermentation in small open-top fermenters using a combination of whole berries and crushed fruit to develop complexity while preserving the delicate aromatics that are the hallmark of cool-climate Pinot Noir. Maturation in French oak — with a judicious proportion of new oak to add structure without overwhelming the pure fruit character — and minimal intervention throughout the winemaking process ensure that the wines are a genuine and honest expression of the Bellarine Peninsula terroir.
The Region: Bellarine Peninsula & Geelong Surf Coast, Victoria
The Bellarine Peninsula is a broad, low-lying peninsula that extends into Port Phillip Bay and Bass Strait south of Geelong, approximately 75 kilometres southwest of Melbourne. The peninsula's cool, maritime climate — moderated by the cooling influence of Bass Strait to the south and Port Phillip Bay to the north — creates ideal conditions for producing wines of exceptional freshness, natural acidity, and aromatic complexity. The combination of warm, sunny days and cool maritime breezes allows grapes to ripen slowly and evenly, developing concentrated flavours while retaining the natural acidity and elegant tannin structure that define cool-climate wines at their finest.
The Bellarine Peninsula's soils are among its most distinctive and important features. The region's ancient volcanic soils — derived from basalt flows that covered the peninsula millions of years ago — are rich in minerals, free-draining, and capable of producing wines of extraordinary depth and mineral character. The combination of volcanic soils, cool maritime climate, and the moderating influence of two bodies of water creates a terroir of genuine uniqueness and distinction — one that is ideally suited to Pinot Noir, which thrives in cool, well-drained, mineral-rich soils and the long, slow ripening seasons that maritime climates provide.
The Geelong Surf Coast — the stretch of coastline that runs southwest from Geelong towards Torquay and Anglesea — is the home of Bellbrae Estate's Longboard range, named for the longboard surfboards that are synonymous with the relaxed, sun-drenched lifestyle of the Surf Coast. The Surf Coast's proximity to Bass Strait gives it an even more pronounced maritime influence than the broader Bellarine Peninsula, producing wines of exceptional freshness and vibrancy that are perfectly suited to the relaxed, outdoor lifestyle of the region.
Our Range

Bellbrae Estate Bird Rock Pinot Noir — Bellarine Peninsula — The premium expression of the Bellbrae Estate range, named for Bird Rock — a distinctive coastal landmark on the Bellarine Peninsula — and crafted to showcase the full depth and complexity of the estate's finest fruit. Hand-harvested at optimal ripeness, fermented in small open-top fermenters with a combination of whole berries and crushed fruit, aged in French oak with a judicious proportion of new oak, and produced with minimal intervention throughout. Bright ruby red with garnet highlights and excellent clarity. A very pure nose of violets, fresh raspberry, and elegant floral notes, with subtle hints of red cherry, wild strawberry, and earthy undertones characteristic of cool-climate Geelong Pinot Noir. Silky, long palate with fine-grained tannins and vibrant natural acidity. Exceptionally long finish with great fruit purity, displaying layers of raspberry, cherry, and subtle spice. A wine of beautiful balance between elegance and intensity that speaks directly of the Bellarine Peninsula terroir. Outstanding with roasted duck, mushroom risotto, grilled salmon, aged cheeses, and slow-cooked lamb shoulder. Cellaring potential to 2036 and beyond.
How to Enjoy Bellbrae Estate Wines
Both Bellbrae Estate Pinot Noirs are best served at 14–16°C in a generous Burgundy-style glass that allows the full aromatic complexity to express itself. The Longboard is approachable upon release and benefits from 15–20 minutes of breathing — a wine for immediate pleasure and the relaxed enjoyment of good food and good company. The Bird Rock rewards decanting for 20–30 minutes and has the structure and fruit purity to develop beautifully in the cellar for a decade or more. Both wines are outstanding partners for the full range of Surf Coast and Bellarine Peninsula produce — fresh seafood, local duck, mushroom dishes, and the artisan cheeses and charcuterie that the region is celebrated for.
