Bangalore & Indian Whisky Production – Tropical Maturation
Located in Bangalore, Karnataka, at an elevation of approximately 920 metres above sea level, Amrut Distillery benefits from India's unique tropical climate that creates distinctive maturation conditions unlike anywhere else in the whisky world. The warm temperatures and high humidity of Bangalore accelerate the maturation process dramatically—what might take 12 years in Scotland can be achieved in just 3-4 years in India. This rapid maturation, combined with a significantly higher 'angels' share' (evaporation rate of up to 12% annually compared to Scotland's 2%), creates whiskies of remarkable concentration and intensity.
Amrut sources barley from the foothills of the Himalayas and uses water from the Arkavathy River, combining premium ingredients with traditional copper pot still distillation. The tropical climate imparts unique characteristics to the whisky, with the spirit interacting more intensely with the oak casks, developing rich, complex flavours in a fraction of the time required in cooler climates.
