Wild Duck Creek Grandpa Duck Cabernet Shiraz 2022 is a wine made with purpose and affection — a tribute to Wild Duck Creek founder David Anderson, affectionately known as Grandpa Duck to his four grandchildren, and a celebration of his more than 50 years in the Australian wine industry. David’s two favourite varieties are Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz, and this wine honours that passion: sourced from the most intensely flavoured and structured fruit of the Rathjen Vineyard in Heathcote, and aged for 26 to 30 months in new French and American oak hogsheads before blending and bottling. Opulent, silky, and deeply characterful.

Appearance

Deep, rich red with the concentration and depth of a Heathcote Cabernet Shiraz built for the long haul.

Aroma

A complex and fragrant bouquet of choc-mint ice cream, blackcurrant, mulberry, anise, and cinnamon, accented by red cherry and subtle earthy notes of brick dust and paperbark. Gently spicy and immediately distinctive.

Palate

Succulent, soft, and velvety — an opulent yet fresh palate that balances generosity with elegance in a way that is both comforting and sophisticated. Silky and unctuous in texture, with classic richness complemented by unexpected charm and finesse. A wine that lingers long after the glass is empty.

Pairs With

Slow-roasted lamb shoulder, beef Wellington, duck confit, aged hard cheeses, and rich braised dishes. A wine worthy of a special occasion — or of honouring someone who deserves one.

Winemaking Notes

Sourced exclusively from the Rathjen Vineyard in Heathcote — selected for the most intensely flavoured and structured Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz parcels the site produces. The wine spends 26 to 30 months in new French and American oak hogsheads, a maturation period that builds the depth, complexity, and silky tannin structure that define the Grandpa Duck style, before being blended and bottled by hand.

Producer History

Wild Duck Creek Estate was founded by David Anderson — a man whose passion for Heathcote Shiraz and the wines of the region has driven more than 50 years of dedication to the Australian wine industry. Known to his four grandchildren as Grandpa Duck, David’s influence on Wild Duck Creek is felt in every bottle the estate produces — but nowhere more so than in this wine, created specifically in his honour, using the two varieties he loves most, from the vineyard he knows best.
