Tahbilk Estate Shiraz 2021 is a stellar example of cool-climate Nagambie Lakes Shiraz — crafted using one of Australia's most distinctive winemaking traditions, fermentation in original open oak vats over 150 years old. Jeni Port awarded it 94 points in Halliday's Wine Companion, describing it as a vintage where Shiraz shines with a clean, pure, natural fruit drive that is quite stunning. Violet florals, dark plum, aniseed, earth, and sweet spices on the nose; a fine line of tannin guiding the palate to a finish of style and grace. Drink now to 2036.
Tasting Notes
Appearance
Deep ruby red with brilliant clarity — the concentrated, vibrant colour of a cool-climate Nagambie Lakes Shiraz from a vintage of exceptional natural fruit drive.
Aroma
Heady scents of violet florals, earth, ripe black fruits, plum, aniseed, and sweet spices — great varietal definition and a sophisticated aromatic profile that reflects Tahbilk's traditional winemaking values and the quality of the 2021 La Niña season.
Palate
Bright, spicy, and savoury with luscious dark plum and berry fruits. A fine line of tannin guides the palate with supple, chewy grip, finishing with style and grace. The clean, pure fruit drive of the 2021 vintage is immediately apparent — a wine that is delicious now and will develop further complexity through to 2036.
Pairs With
When young, pairs beautifully with robust meat-based stews, grilled or roast beef, and strong hard cheeses — especially cheddar. With age, look to game dishes of roast duck, venison, or kangaroo, and the delicate flavours of veal. The wine's supple savoury tannins make it an excellent choice for hearty dining at any stage of its development.
Wine Sellers Direct Verdict
The 2021 Tahbilk Shiraz is the stronger of the two recent vintages — where the 2022 is crunchy and needs time, the 2021 is already showing the clean, pure fruit drive that Jeni Port described as quite stunning. At the same price point, the 2021 offers more immediate drinking pleasure and a slightly more elegant tannin structure. Both are exceptional value for 94-point Victorian Shiraz under $20, but if you want to open a bottle tonight, the 2021 is the one to reach for.
Best for: Everyday drinkers who want a 94-point Victorian Shiraz ready to drink now.
Style: Cool-climate Nagambie Lakes Shiraz with violet florals, dark plum, and elegant tannins.
Occasion: Weeknight, casual dining, gift, dinner party.
Who Should Drink This?
This is for the wine drinker who wants quality and history at an everyday price — a 94-point Victorian Shiraz from one of Australia's oldest continuously operating wineries, available for under $20. The 2021 vintage is more immediately approachable than the 2022, making it the better choice for those who want to drink now rather than cellar. Equally compelling for beginners discovering cool-climate Victorian Shiraz and for everyday drinkers who want a reliable, food-friendly red with genuine character.

Winemaking Notes
Tahbilk's traditional red winemaking practices of open oak vat fermentation followed by maturation in a mix of large aged and smaller new oak barrels are honoured with this release. Fermentation takes place in original open vats well over 150 years old, with maturation in similarly aged large French oak prior to bottling. Smaller French and American oak barrels are also used, with the wine from these blended back during final filtering and bottling. 14% ABV.
Vintage Conditions
La Niña had a major influence on the 2020/21 growing season. Tahbilk experienced good rainfall post-2020 vintage and regular rainfall throughout the year — keeping vineyards healthy and vibrant with no disease or growth issues. A cool-to-warm summer produced slow, steady ripening. By mid-March the whites were all picked, with Marsanne in particular showing great promise. Daily light showers delayed red picking, but when the rain stopped the reds jumped in sugar rapidly and the winery team worked flat out to keep pace. A vintage that looked touch and go at times — rated very good to potentially stellar.
What's Similar?
The Tahbilk Estate Shiraz 2022 is the natural companion vintage — more structured and crunchy in youth, with a longer cellaring horizon. For a comparable cool-climate Victorian Shiraz at a similar price point, Mitchelton Shiraz offers a useful regional comparison. For those who prefer a warmer-climate, more powerful Shiraz style, Heathcote producers such as Jasper Hill or Sanguine Estate offer a contrasting expression at a higher price point.

Winery & Vintage Info
La Nina had a major influence on the 2020/21 growing season.
Tahbilk experienced good rainfall post 2020 vintage, and regular rainfall through the year. Notwithstanding the challenges this presented for the vineyard team, who worked diligently to get their sprays on as required, the frequent rain days ensured the vineyards looked healthy and vibrant, with no disease or growth issues.
The effects of La Nina contributed to a cool to warm, but not hot summer, which meant a slow and steady ripening. By mid-March we’d picked all of the whites with all very promising – Marsanne in particular. We’d also picked some reds by mid-March, mostly for Rosé, however daily light showers that followed had us all nervously waiting for the rain to stop so we could start picking the reds in earnest.
The rain did stop and, after a lull in ripening, the reds jumped in sugar and the winery staff were flat out keeping up with the picking.
For a vintage that looked touch and go quite a few times, 2021 is rated a very good, to potentially stellar vintage.
