Rutherglen Estate Durif 2023 is an expressive and approachable Rutherglen Durif of genuine power and elegance — grown on De Bortoli’s Shelley’s vineyard on the eastern edge of the Rutherglen region, on an interesting mix of gravel, clay, and alluvial soils that generates different flavour profiles across the site. Concentrated dark berry flavours of blueberry and blackberry, chocolate and mocha from careful oak maturation, and classic Durif tannins that provide excellent structure and grip whilst remaining well-integrated for a smooth, satisfying finish. Serve at 16–18°C.

Appearance

Deep, brooding red with vibrant crimson hues — excellent depth of colour that reflects the concentrated fruit character and intensity that make Durif so distinctive.

Aroma

Rich and fruit-forward — blueberries and blackberries lead an inviting bouquet, with spice, chocolate, and mocha adding complexity and depth, and well-integrated oak contributing subtle vanilla and toasted nuances.

Palate

Concentrated and layered — blueberry and blackberry are beautifully complemented by chocolate and mocha notes from careful oak maturation. Classic Durif tannins provide excellent structure and grip, yet remain well-integrated for a smooth and satisfying finish of real length and persistence. A wine of genuine power and elegance in equal measure.

Pairs With

Grilled steak, BBQ ribs, braised beef, lamb shanks, aged cheddar, blue cheese, and hearty stews. A full-bodied Rutherglen red built for the table.

Winemaking Notes

Grapes are selected from the best Durif blocks on Shelley’s vineyard, partially crushed into red fermenters, and picked when tannins are ripe and the grapes are still plump and fresh. Colour and tannin are extracted early in fermentation using longer pump overs to ensure a softer extraction, before the wine ferments for 10–14 days on skins to maintain a bright and vibrant fruit profile. Aged in a mix of French and American oak including 10% new oak — a combination that delivers tightness and roundness on the palate whilst helping to soften the tannins.

Vintage Conditions

2023 was a slightly cooler than average year without any extreme heat events, but a very wet and stressful spring made for a difficult growing season. Fortunately, conditions normalised post-December, with February and March drying out and delivering ideal mild days that resulted in a fantastic year for Rutherglen’s red varieties. The season finished three weeks later than average — and in the words of the winemaking team: “We feel fortunate to have ended up with the wines we have in the cellar.”
