Tasting Notes

Appearance

Pale straw with brilliant clarity and subtle green tinges, displaying the pristine quality characteristic of premium Hunter Valley Semillon. The wine's delicate hue reflects its youthful vibrancy whilst suggesting excellent cellaring potential over the next decade.

Aroma

The bouquet opens with vibrant notes of freshly squeezed lemon and lime zest, complemented by subtle hints of lemongrass, cut hay and gentle vanilla undertones. A pronounced mineral edge adds complexity, reflecting the unique Hunter Valley vineyard sites where these grapes were carefully cultivated during the 2019 growing season.

Palate

Light-bodied yet beautifully structured, the wine presents a refined texture with remarkable purity and tension. Bright acidity drives flavours of fresh citrus—lemon curd, lime and grapefruit—across the palate, whilst maintaining elegant restraint. The finish is crisp, clean and refreshingly dry, leaving a lingering impression of citrus and minerality that invites the next sip.

Pairs With

This versatile Semillon pairs beautifully with freshly shucked oysters, grilled white fish with herb butter, goat's cheese salad, and Asian-inspired dishes such as Thai green curry or Vietnamese rice paper rolls. The wine's bright acidity and citrus notes also complement sushi and sashimi, whilst its refined structure matches perfectly with roasted chicken and creamy pasta dishes.

Winemaking Notes
The Mount Pleasant Elizabeth Semillon 2019 is sourced exclusively from the prestigious Lovedale vineyard, where it has been crafted as quintessential Hunter Valley Semillon since the early days of Mount Pleasant. This wine exemplifies traditional Hunter Valley winemaking philosophy, where minimal intervention allows the vineyard's inherent quality to shine. Grapes were hand-selected from premium sites and gently pressed to preserve the delicate aromatics and natural acidity that define exceptional Semillon. Fermentation took place in stainless steel tanks at cool temperatures to retain the wine's vibrant citrus character and pristine fruit expression. The wine was aged on fine lees to develop textural complexity whilst maintaining its characteristic freshness and purity. No oak maturation was employed, ensuring the wine's mineral-driven profile and bright acidity remain at the forefront. Aged for 5 years before release, the Elizabeth is released in its optimal drinking window—a hallmark of the style that rewards both immediate enjoyment and further cellaring potential.

Vintage Conditions
The 2019 vintage in the Hunter Valley proved to be an outstanding year for Semillon production, characterised by near-ideal growing conditions that delivered wines of exceptional quality and longevity. The season began with adequate winter rainfall, replenishing soil moisture reserves and setting the stage for healthy vine growth. A mild spring encouraged even budburst and flowering, whilst the summer months brought warm, dry days tempered by cool nights—perfect conditions for developing intense flavour concentration whilst preserving natural acidity. Crucially, the absence of significant rainfall during the critical ripening period allowed for extended hang time, enabling the grapes to achieve optimal physiological ripeness. Harvest commenced in late January under clear skies, with fruit arriving at the winery in pristine condition, displaying the hallmark citrus intensity and mineral complexity that define this exceptional vintage.
