Tasting Notes

Appearance

Medium ruby red with vibrant crimson hues and excellent clarity, displaying the characteristic colour profile of cool-climate Gippsland Pinot Noir. The wine's translucent edges and bright core reflect its youthful energy and careful winemaking, whilst the depth of colour suggests concentrated fruit and fine structure.

Aroma

The bouquet opens with enticing aromas of dark cherry, raspberry and wild strawberry, complemented by subtle notes of forest floor, dried herbs and a hint of spice. Underlying earthy complexity adds intrigue, whilst delicate floral notes and a touch of oak-derived vanilla provide additional layers to this expressive nose.

Palate

Medium-bodied with silky tannins and vibrant acidity, the palate delivers concentrated dark fruit flavours—black cherry, plum and cranberry—balanced beautifully with savoury elements of mushroom, undergrowth and subtle pepper. The wine's fine-grained texture and regional character shine through, leading to a long, elegant finish with lingering fruit and earthy complexity that epitomises quality Gippsland Pinot Noir.

Winemaking Notes
The Hoddles Creek Wickhams Road Gippsland Pinot Noir 2025 is sourced exclusively from Hoddles Creek Estate's own vineyard in Gippsland, where the winemaking team travels weekly to personally tend the vines, ensuring meticulous attention to detail throughout the growing season. This hands-on approach reflects the estate's commitment to expressing the unique terroir of this cool-climate region. The fruit was carefully hand-selected at optimal ripeness and gently destemmed to preserve whole berries, before undergoing a cold soak to extract colour and delicate aromatics. Fermentation took place in small open-top fermenters with a combination of wild and cultured yeasts, allowing the wine's natural character to develop whilst maintaining control over the fermentation process. Gentle pump-overs and hand plunging ensured soft tannin extraction, whilst the wine was guided through the winery with minimal intervention to showcase maximum regional expression. Following fermentation, the wine was aged in French oak barrels—a combination of new and seasoned wood—to add subtle complexity without overwhelming the fruit's inherent elegance and the distinctive savoury character that defines Gippsland Pinot Noir.

Vintage Conditions
The 2025 vintage in Gippsland proved to be an exceptional year for Pinot Noir production, characterised by ideal cool-climate growing conditions that delivered wines of remarkable balance and regional typicity. The season commenced with adequate winter rainfall, replenishing soil moisture and establishing healthy vine canopies. Spring brought mild temperatures and minimal frost risk, encouraging even budburst and successful flowering across the vineyard. The summer months were notably cool with moderate temperatures and occasional rainfall, providing perfect conditions for slow, even ripening—crucial for developing the complex flavour profiles and natural acidity that define premium Pinot Noir. Crucially, the absence of extreme heat events allowed the grapes to achieve physiological ripeness whilst retaining their characteristic freshness and vibrant fruit character. Harvest took place in late March under clear skies, with fruit arriving at the winery in pristine condition, displaying concentrated dark fruit flavours, excellent natural acidity and the distinctive savoury complexity that marks this outstanding vintage.
