Pale lemon with a golden hue. The 2021 Passing Clouds Estate Chardonnay has intense aromatics driven by classic Musk lemon and lime, sweat breads come in with touches of, as well as a touch of citrus pith, interest added with the faintest hint of ashy-reduction. A palate that is velvety and full, held upright with titillating acidity. The richness is derived from full malolactic fermentation required in cold years to reduce acidity. Oak is plush, tempered by high acid, the citrus fruit blends with a phenolic prickle derived from the skin contact; all this works towards a textured, elegant finish and exquisite length.

Winery & Vintage Info

Pass Clouds winery manage the vineyard according to regenerative agricultural practices. This is a way of farming using a set of principles that enrich soils and increase their carbon storage capacity, increase biodiversity, improve the water cycle and enhance the overall ecosystem of the farm.

2021 was a challenging year in viticultural. After a long damp Summer and Autumn we were able to finish picking literally hours before a downpour. The fruit was clean, and the seemingly everlasting hang time allowed for extra development, leading to complexity, high acids and a prediction of longevity.

The Passing Cloud Musk Estate vineyard is on a very cool site with a peak elevation of 742m above sea level, North facing with volcanic soils. The modified wide T Trellis gives increased sunlight and wind penetration. This leads to greater vine balance, and a reduction in disease pressure. The vineyard is hand-tended with spur pruning, leaf plucking, shoot thinning, and bunch thinning.

The fruit was crushed, pressed, settled and then to oak. 50% spent 24 hours on skins prior to being pressed., 80% new. Fermented in hogsheads and puncheons, a mix of strains and wild. Fortnightly bâtonnage. Full MLF was conducted due to high acid from a cool vintage. Matured for 12 months. Sterile Filtered.
