Brown Brothers Cienna is a vibrant ruby red wine unique to Australia, blending Sumoll and Cabernet Sauvignon grapes developed by CSIRO in 1972. Bursting with juicy blueberry, raspberry, and vanilla flavours, this refreshing red wine is best served chilled and features a delightful light fizz on the finish.

Tasting Notes

Appearance

In the glass, Cienna displays a striking, vibrant ruby red colour that reflects its namesake sienna hue. The wine's brilliant clarity and depth showcase its youthful character.

Aroma

The nose reveals enticing aromas of fresh red berry fruit, including cherry, blackcurrant, and plum, complemented by a subtle hint of spice and delicate floral notes that add complexity to this approachable wine.

Palate

With fruit sweetness on the palate, Cienna is rich and juicy, delivering bright flavours of summer berries balanced by refreshing acidity. The wine's low tannin content ensures a smooth, easy-drinking experience, whilst the slightly fizzy finish adds a playful, refreshing element perfect for warm Australian summers.

Pairs With

Cienna's versatility makes it an exceptional food wine. The wine's natural sweetness beautifully offsets spicy Chinese hot pots and Thai curries, whilst its bright acidity complements succulent grilled meats and barbecue fare. For cheese lovers, pair with soft, creamy varieties, or explore sweeter pairings with chocolate desserts and mouth-watering meringue. This unique red wine even shines alongside Katherine Sabbath's Cienna, Chocolate & Raspberry Cream Fudge Cake.

At 8.5% alcohol, Cienna is best enjoyed young and fresh, ideally served chilled straight from the fridge. A truly distinctive Australian wine that challenges expectations.

Winemaking Notes

Cienna is an exciting grape variety bred by the CSIRO Plant Industry in 1972 by crossing Sumoll, a Spanish grape variety, with Cabernet Sauvignon. The grapes are typically harvested early to retain their natural acidity and freshness, which is essential to the wine's vibrant character. The winemaking approach for this unique varietal focuses on preserving the bright fruit flavours and natural sweetness whilst maintaining a light, refreshing style. The wine receives no oak treatment and is bottled soon after fermentation to capture its youthful exuberance and signature light fizz. This minimal intervention approach allows the distinctive characteristics of the Cienna grape to shine through, resulting in a wine with 8.5% alcohol that's approachable, fruit-forward, and perfectly suited to the Australian climate it was designed for.

Vintage Conditions

Grown in North West Victoria, the Cienna grapes benefit from the region's warm climate and consistent growing conditions. The variety's inherent disease resistance makes it easier to cultivate than many traditional grape varieties, thriving in Australia's warming climate as originally intended by CSIRO's breeding programme. The vineyard conditions in this region provide the ideal environment for developing Cienna's characteristic high sugar content and vibrant fruit flavours, whilst the early harvest timing ensures the grapes retain their essential acidity and freshness. These growing conditions contribute to the wine's distinctive ruby red colour and the concentrated berry flavours that have made Cienna a signature wine for Brown Brothers since its first release in 2000.
