Mud House Pinot Noir 2023 is sourced exclusively from the Claim 431 Vineyard in the Bendigo sub-region of Central Otago — one of New Zealand’s most celebrated addresses for Pinot Noir. Free-draining loam soils over schist gravel, combined with the dramatic diurnal temperature variation that defines Central Otago, produce fruit of exceptional structure, concentration, and aromatic purity. Smooth, elegant, and built to age beautifully over the next five years.

Appearance

Bright garnet with the clarity and vibrancy of a well-made Central Otago Pinot Noir.

Aroma

Fragrant cherry aromas are complemented by savoury herb notes and a hint of delicate oak spice — an expressive and inviting bouquet that speaks directly to the Bendigo sub-region’s distinctive character.

Palate

Ripe cherry and bramble flavours combine to create a smooth and elegant palate of real finesse. Soft tannins and refreshing acidity contribute texture and structure, leading into a long, juicy finish that lingers with genuine persistence.

Pairs With

Thai-style cucumber salad with barbecue duck — as matched by the Mud House kitchen. Equally at home with roasted salmon, duck confit, mushroom risotto, and soft-rind cheeses.

Winemaking Notes

The grapes were gently hand-picked to allow whole berries to remain intact — a critical decision for preserving the delicate fruit character and aromatic lift that define great Central Otago Pinot Noir. After a week-long cold soak, each parcel was fermented with a combination of wild and cultured yeasts, with daily plunging to extract vibrant colour, flavour, and delicate tannin structure. Parcels were pressed separately and left to age in carefully selected oak. In the spring following harvest, after completing malolactic fermentation, each parcel was individually tasted before the final blend was assembled — a meticulous process that ensures every bottle reflects the full potential of the Claim 431 Vineyard.

Vintage Conditions

The Claim 431 Vineyard in Bendigo sits at the heart of Central Otago — a region defined by its continental climate, ancient schist soils, and the dramatic diurnal temperature variation that swings between warm days and cool nights throughout the growing season. This temperature contrast is the engine of Central Otago Pinot Noir’s distinctive character: warmth builds fruit concentration and ripeness, whilst cool nights preserve the natural acidity, aromatic intensity, and structural precision that make the region’s wines so compelling. The 2023 vintage delivered the conditions that Bendigo does best, producing fruit of exceptional quality from the free-draining loam and schist gravel soils that have made Claim 431 one of the sub-region’s most respected vineyard sites.
