Escarpment Te Rehua Pinot Noir 2022 is a single-vineyard Pinot Noir from the Barton Vineyard on Martinborough's renowned Terraces. Planted on deep alluvial gravels and matured for 20 months in French oak, Te Rehua is consistently one of Escarpment's richest and most structured Pinot Noir expressions.

Appearance

Deep ruby red with bright clarity and the concentrated colour of a wine built for the long term.

Nose

Dark cherry, blackberry and plum layered with dried herbs, spice, dark chocolate and subtle savoury complexity from whole-cluster fermentation.

Palate

Concentrated and structured with dark berry fruit, fine tannins and impressive depth. The 21% whole-cluster inclusion contributes aromatic lift and complexity while French oak supports texture and longevity. Long, savoury and persistent.

Cellaring

Drink 2025–2035. Decant when young or cellar confidently for additional complexity.

Winemaking Notes

Grapes hand-harvested from the Barton Vineyard on Huangarua Road, Martinborough — planted in the 1990s on deep alluvial gravels on the Martinborough Terraces, with a range of Pinot Noir clones. Fermented in open-top tanks with indigenous yeasts and 21% whole clusters; hand-plunged once daily with a total vat time of 25 days. Matured for 20 months in 43% new French oak barriques. Bottled without fining or filtration.

Vintage Conditions

The 2022 vintage at Te Rehua delivered the hallmark richness and density that define this distinctive Martinborough site — dark chocolate, soy, Christmas cake, and rich sweet fruit character underpinned by the firm tannin structure and aromatic complexity that give this wine its reputation for longevity. A vintage that showcases Te Rehua’s warm, free-draining alluvial gravel terroir at its most expressive.
