Collection: Ron Matusalem | Premium Cuban-Heritage Rum

Ron Matusalem — Cuba's Most Iconic Premium Rum, Over 140 Years in the Making

Ron Matusalem is one of the great names in the history of rum — a brand of extraordinary heritage, craftsmanship, and elegance that has been captivating spirits lovers for over 140 years. Born in Cuba during the island's Golden Age of rum production, Matusalem became the most sought-after rum of its era, an indelible icon of Cuban culture and a benchmark of premium rum-making that endures to this day. With a philosophy built on the belief that elegance is timeless, Ron Matusalem continues to pioneer the pleasure of tasting, expressing, and sharing natural good taste.

History & Heritage

Ron Matusalem was founded in 1872 in Santiago de Cuba by the Alvarez Camp brothers — Spanish immigrants who brought with them the winemaking traditions of their homeland and applied them to the art of rum production. The name Matusalem — the Spanish form of Methuselah, the biblical patriarch said to have lived for 969 years — was chosen as a statement of the founders' ambition: to create a rum of extraordinary longevity, quality, and character.

The brand flourished during Cuba's Golden Age, becoming the rum of choice for the island's most celebrated figures and a symbol of the sophistication and joie de vivre that defined the era. When political upheaval forced the founding family to leave Cuba in the 1960s, they carried the Matusalem legacy with them — preserving the original recipes, the Solera ageing method, and the commitment to quality that had defined the brand for nearly a century. Today, Ron Matusalem is produced in the Dominican Republic, continuing the Cuban tradition of excellence in a new home while honouring the spirit of its origins.

The Solera Ageing Method

What truly sets Ron Matusalem apart from the vast majority of rum producers is its unwavering commitment to the Solera ageing process — a method borrowed from the great Sherry bodegas and Brandy houses of Spain and applied with masterful skill to rum production. In the Solera system, rums of different ages are blended together in a series of barrels arranged in tiers, with the oldest rum at the bottom and progressively younger rums above. As rum is drawn from the oldest barrels for bottling, it is replenished from the tier above, which in turn is replenished from the tier above that, and so on.

This continuous fractional blending creates a rum of extraordinary consistency and complexity — every bottle carries the accumulated character of rums spanning many years of ageing, resulting in a depth and balance that no single-age rum can replicate. The Solera method also demands meticulous attention to the selection of the finest woods and the most complementary blends — a craft that Matusalem's master blenders have refined over generations. It is this process, more than any other single factor, that has brought perfection to the exclusive Matusalem rums right up until the present day.

The Region: Dominican Republic (Cuban Heritage)

While Ron Matusalem's soul is Cuban — rooted in the traditions, techniques, and spirit of Santiago de Cuba — the rum is today produced in the Dominican Republic, a Caribbean island nation that shares Cuba's tropical climate, sugar cane heritage, and rum-making culture. The Dominican Republic's warm, humid climate, fertile soils, and access to premium sugar cane provide the ideal conditions for producing the high-quality base spirit that Matusalem's Solera ageing process transforms into something extraordinary. The Caribbean's consistent warmth accelerates the interaction between spirit and oak, allowing the rum to develop rich colour, complexity, and depth in a relatively short time compared to cooler-climate spirits.

Our Range

Ron Matusalem Gran Reserva 15 — The flagship expression and the heart of the Matusalem range. Born in Cuba, where it became an icon of the Golden Age, the Gran Reserva 15 is a rich and beautifully aged spirit with a unique mahogany colour and golden amber tones. Its complex flavour profile features intense spices of cloves and vanilla alongside notes of caramel, honey, and toasted wood. On the palate, subtle hints of wood and coffee make for a deeply satisfying sipping experience. Produced using the traditional Solera ageing method, every glass carries the accumulated character of rums spanning many years of patient maturation.

Ron Matusalem Insolito — A pioneering and genuinely unique expression — the world's first Rosé aged rum. Inspired by the pale salmon rosé wines of Provence, France, Insolito is aged in rum casks that previously held Provencal rosé wine, imparting a delicate and entirely original flavour profile. A buttery finish with hints of brioche and toasted bread, with red fruits singing in harmony with the remnants of the wine's tannins. A rum that will delight connoisseurs and convert non-rum drinkers in equal measure — elegant, approachable, and genuinely unlike anything else in the category.

How to Enjoy Ron Matusalem

The Gran Reserva 15 is best appreciated neat at room temperature or over a single large ice cube — allow it a few minutes to breathe in the glass and the full complexity of the Solera ageing will reveal itself. It is also exceptional in a classic Rum Old Fashioned or a premium Daiquiri where its depth and balance can shine. The Insolito is wonderfully versatile — outstanding neat over ice, magnificent in a Rosé Rum Spritz with sparkling water and a twist of grapefruit, or as the base of a sophisticated cocktail that bridges the worlds of wine and spirits.
