Kavalan has been pioneering the art of single malt whisky in Yilan County, Taiwan, since 2005 — and in doing so has redrawn the map of the whisky world. In less than two decades, this remarkable distillery has accumulated an extraordinary collection of international awards and earned the respect of the world's most discerning whisky critics, proving beyond doubt that great single malt is no longer the exclusive preserve of Scotland or Japan.
History & Vision
Kavalan takes its name from Yilan County's old indigenous name — a land of blessings, nestled between the mountains and the sea on Taiwan's northeastern coast. It was here that entrepreneur Mr. Tien-Tsai Lee dreamed of creating a new whisky homeland and a century-old distillery built to last generations.
Mr. T.T. Lee's ambition to create Taiwan's first whisky took him across the old world to the sacred distilleries of Scotland and Japan. He knew that to compete on the world stage, Taiwan must be world-class — and this tested every sinew of his resolve. Backed by King Car Group and its more than 40 years of beverage experience and knowledge, Kavalan was established with a singular commitment to quality, innovation, and the long view.
Central to Kavalan's rise has been its collaboration with the late Dr. Jim Swan — one of the most celebrated and influential whisky consultants in the world, whose expertise shaped the distillery's maturation philosophy from the outset. Dr. Swan's legacy lives on in Kavalan's highly skilled R&D team, which continues to push the boundaries of what Taiwanese whisky can achieve.
The Region: Yilan County, Taiwan
Yilan County sits on Taiwan's northeastern coast, sheltered by the Central Mountain Range to the west and open to the Pacific Ocean to the east. It is a region of extraordinary natural beauty — lush, green, and blessed with some of the purest water sources in Asia.
Kavalan sources the mineral-rich meltwaters of Snow Mountain — one of Taiwan's highest peaks — as the foundation of every whisky it produces. This pristine water, filtered through ancient rock over centuries, imparts a natural softness and mineral clarity to the spirit that is central to Kavalan's signature character.
Taiwan's subtropical climate creates maturation conditions unlike anywhere else in the whisky world. The intense heat and humidity of Yilan's summers accelerate the interaction between spirit and oak dramatically — what might take 12 years in the cool cellars of Scotland can be achieved in a fraction of the time in Taiwan. The distillery is also uniquely positioned to benefit from the interplay of sea breezes from the Pacific and cool mountain winds from the Central Range, which moderate the temperature and add a subtle complexity to the ageing environment. The result is whisky of remarkable depth, smoothness, and tropical fruit character that is unmistakably Kavalan.
Production & Maturation
Kavalan distils using traditional copper pot stills and matures its whisky in a diverse range of cask types — American ex-Bourbon oak, Portuguese Port wine barriques, Spanish Sherry butts, and more — each contributing distinct layers of flavour to the finished whisky. The distillery's philosophy is one of meticulous cask selection and patient maturation, allowing Taiwan's unique climate to do what no other environment in the world can replicate.
Our Range
Kavalan Distillery Select No.2 Single Malt Whisky 700mL — The most approachable expression in the range and an ideal introduction to Kavalan. Golden dawn in colour with charming floral and grassy aromas, gentle vanilla, and hints of woody and spicy notes. Smooth and rounded on the palate with floral and herbal complexity and a long, fragrant finish. An exceptional daily drinker.
Kavalan Distillery Select No.1 Single Malt Whisky 700mL — Dark amber in colour with aromas of ripe tropical fruits, floral notes, and warm vanilla. Sweet, mellow, and smooth on the palate with generous tropical fruit character. Long finish with creamy toffee, woodiness, and vanilla. Best enjoyed neat or with a small drop of water, or over a single large ice cube.
Kavalan Concertmaster Port Cask Finish Single Malt 700mL — A beautifully crafted expression matured in American oak casks before being finished in Portuguese ruby Port wine barriques. Brownish red in colour with aromas of tropical fruitiness, honey, vanilla, coconut, and candy floss. Rich-bodied and naturally sweet on the palate with generous fruit and honey character. A whisky that pairs magnificently with dark chocolate, milk chocolate truffles, and chocolate desserts.
Kavalan Solist ex-Bourbon Single Cask Strength 700mL — The pinnacle of the range — a single cask, cask strength expression matured in American ex-Bourbon barrels and bottled without dilution. Luminous pale amber with a clean, fresh nose of tropical fruitiness, vanilla, coconut, and spices. Well-balanced natural sweetness, vanilla, and oak spices on the palate — round, complex, and silky smooth. Best appreciated neat to experience the full cask strength character, or with a small drop of water to open the vanilla and tropical fruit notes further. Not recommended over ice.
How to Enjoy Kavalan
The Distillery Select expressions are wonderfully versatile — excellent neat, with a small splash of still water, or over a single large ice cube. The Concertmaster Port Cask is a natural partner for chocolate and dried fruit desserts. The Solist ex-Bourbon Cask Strength rewards patience and attention — pour a measure, allow it to breathe in the glass, and add water gradually to find your preferred balance. All Kavalan whiskies are best served in a tulip-shaped glass that concentrates the distillery's signature tropical fruit and vanilla aromas.
