Fraser Gallop Estate β Margaret River's Benchmark of Elegance
Fraser Gallop Estate is one of Margaret River's most respected and celebrated wine producers β an estate established in 1999 with a clear and uncompromising vision for producing wines of genuine elegance, complexity, and regional authenticity from one of Australia's greatest wine regions. With a commitment to sustainable viticulture, dry-grown vines, and a winemaking philosophy that prioritises freshness and natural expression over extraction and manipulation, Fraser Gallop produces wines that are a genuine and honest reflection of the extraordinary Margaret River terroir.
History & Philosophy
Fraser Gallop Estate was established in 1999 in the heart of the Margaret River wine region β a time when the region was already well-established as one of Australia's premier wine-producing areas, but when there was still significant opportunity for a new estate with a clear vision and a commitment to quality to make its mark. The estate's founders recognised the extraordinary potential of the Margaret River terroir for producing wines of world-class quality, and the decades since have vindicated that vision many times over.
The Fraser Gallop philosophy is built on a deep respect for the vineyard and a commitment to sustainable viticulture practices that allow the natural character of the land to express itself in the wine. The estate's vineyards are meticulously cared for, with a focus on vine health, soil vitality, and the careful management of yields to ensure that only the finest fruit is used in the winemaking process. The commitment to dry-grown vines β vines that are not irrigated and must develop deep root systems to access water from the subsoil β is central to the character of Fraser Gallop's wines, producing fruit of greater concentration, complexity, and natural character than irrigated vines can achieve.
The winemaking philosophy at Fraser Gallop is one of precision and restraint β a commitment to allowing the natural character of the fruit and the terroir to express itself without the heavy-handed intervention that can mask or distort the genuine character of a site. The estate's Cabernet Merlot is crafted with a shorter time on skins and shorter barrel maturation than many of its peers β a deliberate choice that preserves the freshness, vibrancy, and natural fruit character of the Margaret River fruit while still developing the structure and complexity that allow the wine to age magnificently.
The Region: Margaret River, Western Australia
Margaret River is one of Australia's most celebrated and internationally recognised wine regions β a narrow peninsula approximately 270 kilometres south of Perth, bounded by the Indian Ocean to the west and the Southern Ocean to the south, whose Mediterranean climate and ancient gravelly loam soils produce wines of world-class quality. The region's Mediterranean climate β warm, dry summers and mild, wet winters β is moderated by the cooling influence of the Indian Ocean sea breezes that sweep across the peninsula each afternoon, preventing the extreme heat events that can affect less fortunate sites and allowing grapes to ripen slowly and evenly while retaining natural acidity and aromatic complexity.
Margaret River is celebrated above all for two varieties: Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon. The region's Cabernet Sauvignon β and the Bordeaux-style blends that combine Cabernet Sauvignon with Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot β are widely regarded as among the finest produced anywhere in the world outside of Bordeaux itself. The combination of the region's Mediterranean climate, its ancient gravelly loam soils, and the moderating influence of the Indian Ocean creates ideal conditions for producing Cabernet Sauvignon of exceptional elegance, natural acidity, and structural longevity.
The affinity between Margaret River and the Bordeaux varieties is not merely a matter of climate and soil β it is a matter of winemaking philosophy. The best Margaret River Cabernet Sauvignons and Cabernet Merlot blends share with the finest Bordeaux wines a commitment to elegance over power, to structure over extraction, and to the patient development of complexity over time in the cellar. Fraser Gallop Estate's Cabernet Merlot is a perfect expression of this philosophy.
Fraser Gallop Estate Cabernet Merlot β Margaret River
The Fraser Gallop Cabernet Merlot is a sumptuous blend of dry-grown Margaret River Cabernet Sauvignon (81%) and Merlot (19%) β a proportion that reflects the Bordeaux tradition of using Cabernet Sauvignon as the structural backbone of the blend, with Merlot providing the mid-palate richness, softness, and approachability that tames the Cabernet's inherent structural tannins. The blending of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot has been proven over centuries in Bordeaux and over decades in Margaret River's shorter but equally distinguished history β the varieties work so well together because the structural tannins of Cabernet are complemented and softened by the inherent mid-palate richness and suppleness of Merlot, producing a wine of greater harmony and complexity than either variety could achieve alone.
Crafted with a shorter time on skins and shorter barrel maturation than many of its peers β a deliberate choice that preserves the freshness and vibrancy of the dry-grown Margaret River fruit while still developing the structure and complexity that allow the wine to age magnificently. Deep plum colour. Notes of cassis, blackcurrant, and Dutch cocoa balanced with fine-grained tannins and a refreshing minerality on the nose and palate. Forest floor earthiness and a touch of crushed gravel add complexity and depth. Medium-bodied with a long and satisfying finish. A wine that drinks beautifully upon release but has the structure and concentration to develop magnificently in the cellar for six to twelve years.
How to Enjoy Fraser Gallop Estate Cabernet Merlot
