Bumbu Rum Company — Inspired by the Original Caribbean Spirit
Bumbu Rum Company is one of the Caribbean's most celebrated and distinctive craft rum producers — a brand that draws its inspiration from the original ‘bumbu’ — the spiced rum-like spirit that was crafted by sailors, pirates, and traders in the Caribbean as far back as the 17th century, blending local rum with the exotic spices, fruits, and botanicals of the West Indies. Honouring this extraordinary heritage while bringing a contemporary standard of craftsmanship and quality to every bottle, Bumbu produces rums of exceptional smoothness, complexity, and character that have earned a devoted following among rum enthusiasts around the world.
History & Heritage
The word ‘bumbu’ has its roots in the earliest days of Caribbean rum culture. In the 17th and 18th centuries, sailors and traders navigating the waters of the West Indies would blend locally produced rum with the spices, fruits, and natural flavours of the islands — creating a spiced, flavoured spirit that was both a practical way of preserving and enhancing the rum and a reflection of the extraordinary diversity of the Caribbean's natural bounty. This original bumbu — rough, improvised, and deeply connected to the people and places of the Caribbean — is the inspiration for the Bumbu Rum Company's philosophy of blending the finest Caribbean rums with hand-selected spices and natural flavours to create spirits of genuine character and distinction.
Bumbu Rum Company draws on the Caribbean's 400-year rum-making tradition — particularly the extraordinary heritage of Barbados, widely regarded as the birthplace of rum and the island where the art of distilling sugarcane spirit was first perfected in the early 17th century. The island's unique combination of coral limestone soils, tropical climate, and the expertise of its distillers has produced rum of a distinctive character for four centuries, and it is this heritage that forms the foundation of Bumbu's Original expression.
Production Philosophy
Bumbu Rum Company's production philosophy is built on three pillars: the finest Caribbean sugarcane, hand-selected spices and natural flavours, and patient oak barrel ageing. The rums are crafted in small batches by master distillers, using premium sugarcane sourced from across the West Indies and distilled to create a smooth, flavourful base spirit of exceptional quality. A carefully curated blend of hand-selected spices and natural flavours is then added to create the signature Bumbu character — a balance of warmth, sweetness, and complexity that is immediately distinctive and deeply satisfying.
Oak barrel ageing is central to the Bumbu philosophy — a commitment to the patient development of flavour and complexity that sets Bumbu apart from many other spiced and flavoured rum producers. The XO expression takes this commitment to its most ambitious expression, with ageing of up to 18 years in bourbon barrels followed by a selective finish in Spanish white oak sherry casks — a dual-cask maturation process that produces a rum of extraordinary depth, richness, and complexity.
Our Range
Bumbu The Original 700mL — 40% ABV — The flagship expression of the Bumbu range — a small-batch, hand-blended rum crafted from the finest sugarcane from across the West Indies, drawing on the 400-year rum-making heritage of Barbados and the broader Caribbean. Hand-selected spices enhance the distinctive flavour of the base rum, creating a spirit of exceptional balance and smoothness without sacrificing richness or complexity. Rich amber with warm golden highlights. Hand-selected spices on the nose with the rich heritage and craftsmanship of the West Indies. Exceptionally balanced and smooth on the palate with a smooth, complex finish. Outstanding as a sipping rum neat or over ice, in a classic rum punch or Mai Tai, or as the foundation of an Old Fashioned variation.
Bumbu XO 700mL — 40% ABV — The premium aged expression of the Bumbu range — a rum of extraordinary depth and complexity, handcrafted by a master distiller in Panama and aged for up to 18 years in bourbon barrels before being selectively finished in Spanish white oak sherry casks. The dual-cask maturation — the long ageing in bourbon barrels developing the characteristic vanilla, caramel, and toasted oak of American oak, followed by the sherry cask finish adding dried fruit, spice, and the rich complexity of Spanish white oak — produces a rum of remarkable sophistication and character. Rich deep amber with burnished mahogany highlights. Toffee, caramel, vanilla, dried fruits (raisins, figs, dates), warm spices (cinnamon, nutmeg, clove), toasted oak, orange zest, and a hint of coffee on the nose. Rich and smooth on the palate with a silky, mouth-coating texture. Long and warming finish with lingering caramel, spice, and oak. Outstanding neat or with a single ice cube, in a premium Old Fashioned, or alongside dark chocolate, crème brûlée, and premium cigars.
How to Enjoy Bumbu Rum
The Original is the most versatile of the two expressions — outstanding in a classic Bumbu Rum Punch (The Original, fresh lime juice, pineapple juice, grenadine, over ice), a Mai Tai (The Original, orange curaçao, orgeat, fresh lime juice), or simply over ice with a squeeze of fresh lime. The XO is best savoured slowly — neat in a crystal rocks glass or over a single large ice cube — to appreciate the full depth and complexity of up to 18 years of Caribbean maturation. Both expressions are outstanding as sophisticated after-dinner sipping rums, paired with dark chocolate, rich desserts, and premium cigars.
