Winemaking Notes

Pizzini Pietra Rossa Sangiovese 2023 is sourced from Pizzini’s leading Sangiovese vineyard sites — the Hut block G2, Brunello block D6 and Chestnut block D5 — machine picked and fermented with BM45 yeast, made famous in Tuscany for producing great Brunello wines. Fermentation temperatures are maintained at 30°C to extract maximum colour, flavour and tannin, with heat also softening tannins through the polymerisation process. The best free run wine is drained after alcoholic fermentation, settled for a day, then transferred to barrels for malolactic fermentation and 14 months of barrel ageing before blending, fining and bottling. 13.8% alc. 750ml.

Vintage Conditions

The 2023 vintage in King Valley presented its challenges — cool temperatures and incessant rain kept the team on their toes, yet delivered a silver lining of near optimal ripening conditions. Daily temperatures above 15°C before 9am and not rising above 30°C until late afternoon created perfect conditions for maximum flavour and colour development of outstanding King Valley distinction. The cool vintage delivered Sangiovese of exceptional quality — brick red with cherry, mixed berries, leather and earthy flavours, fresh fruit, soft acidity and savoury tannins of enduring Pizzini Pietra Rossa distinction.
