Tasting Notes
Appearance
Deep Ionian purple with waves of dark blue intensity, displaying the concentration and depth characteristic of old-vine McLaren Vale Shiraz from ancient ironstone-rich soils.
Aroma
The assault of aromas seems to be everywhere all at once—the true indication of a great wine. Signature iodine, split red wood, clove, bay and dark cherries in syrup dominate, backed up by Ribena, red liquorice, toasted rye and freshly ground black pepper, creating an inviting and complex aromatic profile that showcases the unique terroir of the JC Block.
Palate
Powerful tannins supported by the ferruginous flavours typical of Upper Tintara define the palate: cocoa, bitumen, terracotta, the Aussie bush and dark red fruits create remarkable complexity. The wine has strength, intensity and glorious grape tannins which wind the palate together, almost like a double helix. The complex structure pulls you straight through, seeming to expand beyond the confines of the palate on an unending finish. This is luxury wine that illustrates what modern McLaren Vale should be, harking back to the tradition of the 1960s without all the artifice of winemaking.
Pairs With
This S.C. Pannell Koomilya JC Block Shiraz pairs beautifully with slow-braised beef short ribs, aged Parmigiano-Reggiano, grilled lamb chops with rosemary, wild mushroom and truffle dishes, or venison with blackberry reduction, and is best decanted an hour before drinking.

Winemaking Notes
This single-block Shiraz comes from old vines grown on ancient, dark grey slaty siltstone rich in ironstone rubble, facing south-west at an altitude of 120m in Upper Tintara, McLaren Vale. The JC Block is named for Jill Cant, the previous owner, and was the first block Stephen Pannell worked with on the vineyard during his tenure as Chief Red Winemaker at Hardy's. The fruit was hand-harvested, gently crushed and pumped to a large old oak fermenter acquired from a dear friend. After spontaneous fermentation and 14 days on skins, the wine was gently pressed and settled in tank for 15 days before transfer to a two-year-old 2,300L French oak vat for malolactic fermentation and extended maturation. The wine was racked three times and bottled unfined, preserving the powerful tannins and ferruginous flavours that define this exceptional site. As Stephen Pannell notes, "These wines have strength, intensity, and glorious grape tannins, which wind the palate together, almost like a double helix. Above all, these wines look and taste, Koomilya."
Vintage Conditions
The 2015 vintage produced an heirloom wine and classic vintage from the JC Block, with conditions allowing the old vines to express the full complexity and power that comes from decades of root development in the ancient, ironstone-rich soils of Upper Tintara. The south-west facing aspect and 120m altitude provided ideal conditions for slow, even ripening, allowing the development of the signature iodine, split red wood, clove and dark cherry characters that define this remarkable site. The vintage delivered grapes with perfect ripeness and concentration, enabling the winemaking approach to focus on gentle handling and minimal intervention. The result is a wine that illustrates what Stephen Pannell hopes modern McLaren Vale wine will be, harking back to the tradition of what it looked like in the 1960s, without all the artifice of winemaking. This is a wine for cellaring—an heirloom wine from a classic vintage that will develop gracefully over twenty years, rewarding patience with ever-increasing complexity and refinement.
