Review

97 Points - Jeni Port, Halliday's Wine Companion - 12 June 2025

"Sadly now destined for development, the original Balgownie vineyard planted by Stuart Anderson in '70 made another stunning wine in '24 in the hands of Heathcote winemakers Tobias Ansted, former Balgownie winemaker, and Simon Osicka. Gives Bendigo cabernet some TLC which sets it soaring. Revels in the kind of complexity that old vines bring with deep, concentrated black fruits with a full spectrum of cabernet characters: cassis, blackberry, loganberry, dark olive, tilled earth, leaf, clove and herbs balanced perfectly in fine tannins laid out against a gentle cedary oak background. Gets the pulse racing, it's that good. A wine for posterity."

Winemaking Notes

This Cabernet Sauvignon comes from the original Balgownie plantings at Maiden Gully, Bendigo, planted in 1970 by Stuart Anderson on the once gold-bearing alluvial clay loam of Myers Creek. The vines are planted on their own roots with rows oriented north/south, providing sun exposure to both sides of the vine. Originally flood irrigated, the vineyard now uses minimal drip irrigation as required, grown on a "lazy VSP" with most shoots trained up but with a few left hanging to provide gentle shade of the bunches. The wine was made at Paul Osicka Wines in Graytown by winemakers Tobias Ansted (formerly Senior Winemaker at Balgownie) and Simon Osicka, who between them have over 74 vintages of experience. The fruit was handpicked and chilled before processing the next day, sorted both pre and post destemmer without any pumping, resulting in close to 100% whole berries with no green matter into one-tonne open pots. The must was largely left alone for the first five days until fermentation commenced to achieve some carbonic lift. Once active, the ferments were plunged and rack-and-returned until baumé dry, then sealed for post-fermentation maceration.

Vintage Conditions

The 2024 vintage produced another stunning wine from these historic vines, sadly now destined for development. The original Balgownie vineyard planted by Stuart Anderson in 1970 delivered fruit of exceptional quality, allowing Tobias Ansted and Simon Osicka to craft a Cabernet that gives Bendigo some much-deserved attention. The vintage conditions allowed the old vines to express the full complexity and concentration that comes with over 50 years of root development in the alluvial clay loam soils. The combination of minimal irrigation, careful canopy management and the vineyard's unique terroir produced grapes with perfect ripeness and balance. The label, inspired by botanical drawings in old viticulture texts of flowering Vitis vinifera, reflects the history of viticulture, working with nature's cycles and the rigour of scientific understanding—though the winemakers admit they just thought they looked cool. This collaboration between two highly experienced winemakers represents a tribute to the age-worthy, medium-bodied Central Victorian Cabernet style that was legendary in the 1980s, proving that great things from that era deserve to return to their former glory.
