Loaded Barrel Small Batch Series Blood Orange Seasoned Cask is a small batch Australian whisky of genuine innovation and dangerously drinkable character β€” four years in a customised 200-litre virgin American oak barrel from Kentucky, then transferred to an ex-Shiraz French oak barrel re-shaved, toasted, and charred in-house, seasoned with the peel of the ripest blood oranges and fortified Port, pressurised for nine months to infuse the vibrant orange essence into the staves, and then a further 18 months of maturation to develop the full layered character. The blood orange burst on the nose is unmistakable from the very first moment.Β 

Appearance

Deep amber with warm copper hues β€” the rich, inviting colour of a small batch whisky that has spent four years in virgin American oak before an additional 27 months in a blood orange and Port seasoned ex-Shiraz French oak cask.

Aroma

Blood orange β€” unmistakable and immediate from the very first moment. The vibrant citrus character of the seasoned cask leading a nose of layered complexity, with the Munich, Ale, Crystal, Voodoo, and Chocolate malt character of the mash bill adding depth and intrigue beneath the orange.

Palate

A vibrant fusion of sweet citrus and zesty orange marmalade on the initial sip β€” perfectly balanced by deep, rich undertones of burnt caramel, bold espresso, and intense dark chocolate. The complex mash bill and the blood orange seasoned cask working in harmony to deliver a dram that is layered, captivating, and impossible to put down.

Serving Suggestion

Neat or over a single large ice cube to let the full blood orange, dark chocolate, and espresso character develop β€” or with a splash of water to open up the citrus and caramel layers. A small batch whisky of this complexity deserves to be savoured slowly.

Production Notes

The mash bill is a carefully selected blend of Munich, Ale, Crystal, Voodoo, and Chocolate malts β€” crafted to deliver a complex and captivating character that allows the light and fruity new make spirit to shine. The whisky began its journey in a customised 200-litre virgin American oak barrel sourced directly from Kentucky, where it matured for four years. It was then carefully transferred to an ex-Shiraz French oak barrel re-shaved, toasted, and charred in-house before being seasoned with the peel of the ripest blood oranges and fortified Port. The cask rested for nine months, pressurised with air to infuse as much vibrant orange essence into the staves as possible, before the whisky spent a further 18 months absorbing the bold citrus character. Bottled at 47.5% ABV.

Producer History

Loaded Barrel Distillery was conceived in 2018 by Head Distiller and owner Bob Wilhelm β€” a family-owned, proudly independent distillery located in Rowville, South East Melbourne. With a small team of four, every bottle gets the time and attention it deserves. The Blood Orange Seasoned Cask is the fullest expression of the Loaded Barrel philosophy: innovative craftsmanship, proprietary barrel work carried out entirely in-house, and a refusal to take shortcuts on the path to something genuinely extraordinary.
